Flex offense VS Motion offense Topic

i play press, so i haven't been able to try it myself. however, i've watched plenty double team him, and it is pretty sad how ineffective it is. not to say it doesn't help, im really not sure, but it doesn't have anything like the profound effect you would expect in real life if one guy on a lineup was taking 90% of the shots and you double teamed him.

a + defense does seem to help, however, because he needs 0 offense from his other players, he tends to have great rebounding with the rest of the team. so, playing a + defense might get him down to a measly 35% 3 pointers, but wind you up with a 46-25 rebounding margin despite you being a top 20 rebounding team nationally. its kind of sad, really.

for a while, i wondered, if the press is so magical, is bingball the answer that can balance the equation? without double team, it easily might be the weakest defense against his style. if more people adopt his style, it should naturally cause many to play for the "best response" to the style, and knock press down a peg to the level of the other defenses. of course, i may just be unfairly biased to the press...

FWIW, three seasons ago w. Montana I had a stud senior sf and an extremely young team around him. I consistently gave the sf way more distro than I'd ever given anyone, and he dramatically underperformed. Once I switched things up and brought his distro to a more reasonable level, both he and my entire offense immediately started playing much better.

I understand that's not definitive, but still worth sharing. I've never had good success piling on distro.

oldave you are assuming that the FCP is a legit Defense, when in reality the way WIS describes its FCP, nobody IRL runs it that way. That is why you can't think about it the way that you are, yeah you are right you should be able to do something like that but since the FCP is not a realistic D (in terms of RL) it doesn't work that way.

FCP and FB should be addons to the main Ds/Os, not have their own identities.

Not true. Teams do it all of the time when they are down by 8 with a minute to go. HD just expands it for another 39 minutes and doesn't care about the score.

I agree on the add-ons for both, assuming you mean you set a frequency for running those. Also assuming they run the FCP more like the current HCP. Haven't they said they were going that route for FB?

IRL what you usually will see is a 3/4 FCP that traps up until the last 1/4, in which case you are right ole d you would have the option in that last 1/4 court to DT specific players, because you'd be running a man or zone type D. In HD there is no final stage of d where your team turns when in the last 1/4 court, its always a trap of the ball.

i get that, zee, thats not where the problem comes in.

what i am trying to say is that if hd can arbitrarily make up this defense that doesnt really exist in real life, then why cant they add a double team to it, even though it might not make sense.

we agree that the whole notion of a FCP offense (as hd describes it) doesnt make any sense... why does the DT in that offense all of a sudden need to make sense? in the end it is just a mathematical formula, just throw a 1.5X in there or something like that and call it good.

if i was trying to think of it in logical terms (which is really unecesarry since the whole FCP itself is illogical) i would put it this way:

"yes we are still trapping everyone in that last quarter court, but we have a special eye out for the shooter, and hence all we need is some kind of multiplier in the formula to account for our "hedging" towards the shooter."

but really, after all, it is not important because the game is what it is. if they want to change it, im sure they know how. and all my blathering is not going to make any difference.

edw, I assume your first point was being sarcastic?

and when you get right down to it, there is really no such thing as a double tema either, in real life....

in pretty much every game, each defensive player (whether zone or man) should have some idea as to who the best shooter on the floor is, or the best post-up man, or the best slasher.

and, from there we are only talking about degrees of how much we are going to hedge away from our assigned player or zone and towards the scorer. and once said scorer actually touches the ball, if he is *that* good, i, as coach, would bloody well hope that at least one, if not two, defenders would be on thier way over to help.

I would love if the press and the fastbreak were a sort of plus/minus defense that you could apply game to game as a strategic option. Sort of like playing in and out.

some of the guys being used in the 'bingfense' as all american level guards are not that special, maybe mid 80's in core skills

I am not convinced this has translated into titles, but it definitely is going on. You guys all know tarek would have this fixed by now, but most have given up with even identifying this stuff to seble, as the only answer we get is 'engine rewrite forthcoming'

lets hope the engine rewrite gives seble the tools to start fixing stuff, without losing the statistical integrity of the game (which continues to be still somewhat accurate in spite of any gripe anyone might have)

maybe someone should start a list of current glitches that the testers should try in the beta of the engine - or is the goal of the new engine to only work the way it is now, I really don't know the answer, does anyone?
