Best Damn $160M Franchise League Reups Topic

I just did my first team with the Cubs and I think they are as competitive as any other team. I lost in the playoffs, but each game was a 1 run game.

That's the hidden frustration associated with this league and WIS Baseball...on paper the Cubs look great and competitive....so do the Dodgers...every Dodger team ever compiled in this league has had Sandy Koufax in one of his great years...and I can't remember one time he didn't have a losing record...this just completed season he was 16-29 and 14-19 for two Dodger teams in this league. ERA nearly 6 for one team and high 4 for the other. The Cubs have some excellent number guys. At 160m - you pick nearly the same team for every franchise...the variables like chosen ballpark etc do come into play. I am not suggesting major changes - just a few tweaks....maybe one season you can draft no pitcher with a WHIP below 1.00 or no players from the 60's or some other random decade....No batting average above .350....anything to make owners pick some new guys...keep the 160m....but change the schedule.... or something ....How about a No H of F season. Wouldn't that add an interesting twist?

I'd be curious if my Yankees team is similar to what others have picked. I never looked at them. I think My cubs team was different from the other one in the league.

I have won the Championship with the Cubs a few times in this league. I have had the Dodgers and never been successful. I agree with redzman on them. I am trying them again this next go around. Both Cubs and Dodgers. When I get the Yankees anything but a World Series win is a disappointment. Again this current finishing season neither Yankees team is in the Championships. WIS really likes Ruth, but not really Bonds. I was shocked and impressed when the Indians won one season WS as I was never successful with them either. Interesting discussion.

I'll take a second team. The A's...

After drafting the White Sox, I took the best player at every position and more than enough innings with eight of the best pitchers and still had $20M for mop-up pitchers and my bench.

We will probably need to lower the cap.

The Yankees have eleven seasons from three players (seven Ruth, two Gehrig, two Mantle) that are better than the highest paid White Sox (1994 Frank Thomas).

$140M is a good start.

Have a 16-team format may be a reasonable alternative, but in the end, its still Yanks, Red Sox, Giants, every time, unless someone gets brave and decides to float the O's out there (and gets crushed).

Or allow only one of each franchise, and have a 20-team format. Assign a point system, and keep the best 10 in one league (no DH), and the rest in the other league (with a DH).

Those are my suggestions.

I have two teams to select, as I've had two entries for the past 3 seasons. In any case, I just want to throw out the historical fact that 2 seasons ago, the Cubs and the Astros were the 2 teams in the World Series. The Astros knocked off the Cubs in 6 games. I know because I was fortunate enough to have both teams.

My suggestion to make the league more competitive is to use a $120 Million salary cap. Quite frankly, I agree with the various comments above about being tired of watching the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants and Cardinals dominate.

Okay, I'll shut up and take my two teams:
Dodgers
Pirates

I assume that is is okay for me to take 2 NL teams, since I did that 2 seasons ago.

I agree with Redzman and others that this is an EXEPTIONALLY well-run league with a great history and great owners. I also play very few leagues any more, and this is one of them. Two things that could be done would be to A) blacklist players (by salary)... i.e. no salary over "X" or B) lower the salary cap. I think $120M would make most franchises competitive without losing the ability to have many of the great players that we enjoy having on our teams.

I also agree with ncih that we should further discuss and implement any changes in the season after this upcoming one.

Now we're talking guys! Good stuff.

I had taken the Reds - think it got deleted earlier.

Updated.

20 teams taken.

Thanks for all the compliments, Gentlemen.

I like going to a $120M cap as well.

I will start the reups earlier to give us time to discuss the changes.

I'd be back as well if the cap was dropped as the reason I quit this league is that the cap was too high given all the recent changes. I'd be ok with either $120 or 140M. A couple of other suggestions:

  • Allow owners to combine two of the expansion teams to be more competetive (i.e. Mets/Diamondbacks, Padres/Astros). When one team has over 100 years of teams to choose from and the other 20-40 it's tought to expect the newer franchises to compete. I think that would get some new teams in here and make it more interesting.
  • Hold a franchise draft. I have never thought it was that fair that the first guys to the forum get to grab the better franchises. Every owner is on even footing and it might force owners to take franchises they haven't tried before.

I don't know how tedious it is, but could we have an informal draft for franchise players?

Say I pick the Yankees first, so I get the second draft pick. Moneybonn gets the 2nd Yankees team, so he gets the first pick. He picks Ruth. Ruth is now off limits to me. I pick Gehrig. He picks Mattingly. I pick Mantle. He picks Dimaggio, and so on.

Now in this madness, I think we should allow a Reds team to take Frank Robinson (from his Reds days) even if the Orioles take the '66 Robinson.

That is an interesting idea. Would definitely mix things up a bit and would get 24 unique teams into the league. And with a two-person draft it should get done pretty quickly, just agree on a time with someone and could draft in one or two sittings.
