Oscar at 23. Not so long ago, the guy was a top 10 pick every year. I don't think he's a top 10 anymore, but I definitely think he's still a first round value.

Depending on the version, there are different strengths and weaknesses. The most $42 million league friendly version isn't the most friendly $52 million league friendly version. One piece of advice (looked-for or unlooked for, I'm giving it, Sappy): Don't count on his total possessions... because of the pace adjustment with usage, Oscar won't give you the number of possessions you'd think. The bright side of that is that he'll give you less turnovers than listed. The down side is that he'll take many, many less free throws. So just pay attention when you're getting your other scorers and don't depend on him giving you 2500 possessions, because it'll be more like 2000.

Zenmaster w/DWade and Ben Wallace. Huge start.

Yeah, but I'll almost certainly foul it up.

McGrady went too late in my opinion - his top scoring season is a beast for the price, without fouls or turnovers that will kill you, plus some rebounding and assists. A little short on minutes, but basically like a lite version of Dwade - except not all that lite.

I was really tempted to take him. I knew this would be the hard part about coming into the ODL with a very specific concept of the team I wanted to build - seeing guys slip to me that are very enticing. I'm gonna be ****** if someone screws it up for me ;)

concepts in draft leagues are hard to do. I had these thoughts for a very brief second:
I'll try to make a team w/ guys I've never used before.
I'll try to make a team w/ only old school players (pre-80s).
but then I said fuggit. the mailman is still available, as was nash, mutombo and a bunch of other guys.

McGrady is a first rounder that never gets picked in the first round.

He is, as monkee said, the Moses Malone of shooting guards in the $42 million set-up.

Well, it's a bit more specific than that - aka I already have a full team built in a draft center and I'm trying to replicate it. It doesn't really have a theme or anything, just an idea that I think I can pull off that could change my draft strategy for future ODLs and open leagues.

It's good to have some idea of where you are headed when you start the draft... but you've got to be willing to take a chance and change your gameplan if something better falls to you.

For example, I fully anticipate drafting a (position) in round (whichever one). I know who will likely be there and who likely won't, so if he's there, I'm taking (the guy). If he's not, I'll go with (this other guy). But, if for some strange reason, (yet another guy I didn't expect) is still there, then I'll be able to adjust, based on the flexibility of draft choices I've already made.

Does that make sense?

huge mcgrady fan as everyone can tell from my BOWIS teams. he can flat out light it up.

only thing I don't care for about him is his 36.4% usage. I'd love to pair him with Jordan and run my 30-30 Marlin concept, but I just can't put MJ on a team with someone who has a higher usage than him, and I don't like the 86-87 version of MJ. Weird, I know... But his high usage is part of what makes him a god.

Yeah, in general that's what I do too - just not this year ;). I actually tried to build my team with McGrady instead of Pierce and didn't like the end result, so went with Pierce instead. Needed a bit more minutes at that position without the extra scoring/assists.

just looking at the early pairings: love the Oscar - Mutombo duo. sappy's got his boards locked up.

hate the Peja - Allen duo tho. 2/5 of the cookie = playoffs and hell for the rest of us.

don't know if i agree w/that, gary. peja and ray are a tough 2/3. but w/o the front court of the cookie, they can leave you with plenty of holes.
2/9/2010 8:53 PM
they may not dominate the boards like the cookie does but the 3s will be tough to stop. I remember someone last season had nash and peja and did pretty well.. anyway, I hope you're right, shap

edit: just checked - I was actually thinking of ncih's team in the Funk52, not ODL. Totally different animal..
