Al - If you can find it try to pick up 'Baseball as I Have Known It', Fred Lieb, 1977. Old baseball writer at the time of the writing. It was the place I first read that Carl Mays wasn't black-balled from the Hall because of the Chapman beaning, but rather because there was serious indications that he was paid to participate in throwing the 1922 World Series.

"Historical" fiction (involves a mysterious trip through time)

"If I Never Get Back" by Darryl Brock...the earliest days of professional ball, around 1876 I think. A fun read.

Another fanciful tale is "The Iowa Baseball Confederacy" by W.P. Kinsella (Shoeless Joe)

It involves the 1908 Cubs and a exhibition against the Iowa Baseball Confederacy All-Stars...a game that no one will admit took place... a very funny story.

For a fascinating story, The Catcher Was a Spy is pretty hard to top. Moe Berg was one interesting dude.

Most recent baseball book I read was the book by Bob Gibson and Reggie Jackson (I think the title was Sixty Feet, Six Inches, but not positive). I enjoyed it a lot. The only drawback was Reggie kissing up to Gibson from time to time, but a good read with a lot of anecdotes about players ranging from the late 1950's thru the late 1980's. The admiration that Gibson holds for Hank Aaron is something that sticks out in my mind.

If the Mays book is anything like the interview that was televised on the MLB network with Bob Costas, it should be excellent.

if you haven't read Playing with the Enemy by Gary Moore, you're missing out.

Also another vote for Crazy '08, October '64 and Summer of '49.

A really good book is Remembrance of Swings Past by Ron Luciano. Very funny. Not too many books from an ump's perspective.
