I suppose teams that produce late round all-stars should do the same? Some real players have more potential than the scouts missed, or "got it" at a certain point of their career. There are considerably more 10th round + players contributing in the MLB than HBD.

In case you missed it, MLB players don't come with little numbers next to their abilities that will indicate how they'll do.

And, for the record, there are considerably more 1st-3rd round picks contributing in HBD than MLB.

In case you missed it, MLB player potential is constantly adjusting when a young player performs well at a specific level, and there is a large amount of inprecision in MLB scouting. Just ask Johan Santana, Mike Piazza, Jorge Cantu, Dan Uggla.

You make my point for me. Anyone drafted outside of the first two rounds is useless in the current HBD.

agreed, the draft system and the IFA system are both broke...not enough uncertainty in the picks and signees...

The way the game works, not sure they could or want to make 3-5th rounds have a better shot to reach the BL club.

What about those 1st round players, should they have a less certainly of not succeeding? Can you imagine all the crying that would cause.

Though I've gotten plenty of defensive shortstops and catchers 'till round 6 or so.
2/26/2010 1:09 AM
And don't forget the strictly power guy or speed guy. Or a CF who has defense with a high range and glove, who also might have some speed.

If you do it right, you can get plenty of BL material throughout the draft. Even if just bench guys.

Damn, we go thru this every week.

Seems everyone wants some late rounders to be BL players. IN THE NAME OF REALISM. Which is fine. But, if you want that, you also should want early round flops to even it out. IN THE NAME OF REALISM!!! But no one in their right mind wants to sit down, rank the players for a couple of hours and end up with three turds as their first three picks while hoping some random 16th rounder becomes a star.

Once that happens, there's no reason to bother ranking players for the draft. It's just random bullshit. And, if you want to play a game with random results, try roulette.

Roulette is random? Shoot.

And devalues HS/COLL scouting...pretty soon we won't have to even bother with budgeting or, if we do, everyone will have the same budgets

I think it would a hilarious to see the whining if WifS overhauled the entire amatuer evaluation process. No more numbers. Just names and scouting reports(college, high school and IFA).

Robert Fireman-MIF/CF
Good contact hitter. Excellent gap power that may develop into home run power. Poor eye. Outstanding glove but lacks range and arm. Very slow.

2/26/2010 8:53 AM
That would be fun but a little too time consuming. I actually like the way the scouting is. I'd be ok if it didn't change a whole lot.
2/26/2010 8:55 AM
It would be way too time consuming. But it would give the people what they claim to want. First round busts and a late round stars.
2/26/2010 9:00 AM
As long as we're able to see numbers, we're going to draft the good players first. And, as long as we draft the good players first, there's no chance a star slips to the 13th round.
2/26/2010 9:01 AM
One of the things people complain a lot about too is that not everybody can see the top 10 or 15 players. And people also complain that first rounders are never busts....

I've always kind of looked at this process as HBD's way of letting good players slip into the middle of the first round. I just like to pretend the reason the teams couldn't see them is because the scouts didn't think highly enough of him to draft him him in the top 5.
