knucks, some people will take on dozens of teams because they're "paying for them". Commishes would have to turn away what may be good owners because they have 38 teams over half of which are largely neglected.
Again, if you're not paying for the team, you're more likely to say "Bah, F it. I've got 17 others that aren't underperforming."
I don't agree with that at all. I run an OOTP league, and my experience in recruiting is that people will not take on a team if they do not have time to run it. People do NOT think, what the h*ll, it's free so I'll do it. I have 3 OOTP teams right now. By your logic, I should have 20 or so, because it's all free anyways. Like most people, I realize that the enjoyment goes down if you have too many teams to pay attention to.
I also do not agree with the idea expressed on this thread that if people perceive a team to be "free" they will not care about it. In OOTP, many people care plenty about their free teams, and spend a lot of time not only managing and trading, but creating press releases, etc. Instead of making assumptions, we ask what actually happens with free leagues.
For the record, I like HBD and plan to play it long-term. I would love to take a new team in a new world and run it for 10 seasons or so. But as a relative newcomer, I have a different perspective than those who are already dedicated to the game, and this perspective may be shared by other potential players. When I first played HBD, I thought, this would be a great game if it were a PC game, which users could mod and create custom leagues. WIS might even improve the game if they wanted to release a new edition. But if HBD were a PC game, it would sell for 20-30 bucks at best, probably closer to 20, and probably end up in the $5 bargain bin in a year. Let's face it, it is a text-based sim, with shareware-level production quality. Now take that 20 buck PC game, and tell users that you have to pay 25 bucks for one season with one team, and furthermore, you can't customize the league however you want. That might change your perspective on the value. Again, I fully realize that if you are already playing the game, by definition you think it is worth it.
I do like the monthly pass idea which let's one use the site as much as they want. I wound not play any other games however. I tried Hoops and Gridiron Dynasty and I would not even play those for free.
