Heh. Yeah, you have to be in the mood for that sort of stuff. It is definitely more like background music and not center of attention stuff. I also have no clue on that new album. They usually have about 3 songs per album I like.

I've been instructed by 'b0t to post in this thread. I've been lurking here for awhile and we all have similar tastes in music, so maybe I can give a few recommendations as well.

I recently told 'b0t about a band named Harlem. I dig their latest album (Hippies). It's a little long in the teeth, but for the most part I enjoy it quite a bit. You have to love an album that has a song named "Gay Human Bones".

Here are my top 5 so far this year:

1. Titus Andronicus - The Monitor: Holy ****, 'nuff said
2. Surfer Blood - Astro Coast: Surfer rock, every song is a hit on this album
3. Sleigh Bells - Treats: They will probably end up being huge, but for now just tell everyone that you heard them before they were on MTV
4. Local Natives - Gorilla Manor: They are like Grizzly Bear in the 70s without the perfect production values
5. Spoon - Transference: Well it's Spoon and Brit Daniel is pretty much a genius so... yeah

My top 5 from last year:

1. Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavillion
2. Sunset Rubdown: Dragonslayer
3. The Very Best: Warm Heart of Africa
4. Micachu and the Shapes: Jewellery
5. Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Some more recommendations for you guys:

The Drums, Small Black, Fang Island, Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, Japandroids, No Age, The Dirty Projectors, The Dum Dum Girls

Wasn't the new Walkmen album supposed to be out by now?
5/22/2010 10:39 AM
Though I must say I wasn't the biggest fan of Surfer Blood. It was okay, but not second best album of the year good.
5/22/2010 10:40 AM
But, every song is a hit? Just kidding, difference in taste I guess.

I liked the new Black Keys a lot. More polished effort than I'm used to from them.

Yeah, it's nice.

Awesome...glad you finally got around to posting here. I love Harlem/Hippies...can't remember if I posted about it here or not. I definitely need to check out some of the others you posted.

Really not with you on Surfer Blood though...to me, it's a lot of what Fang Island and Sleigh Bells try to capture...but a lot less successful.

My top 10 for this year...first three are really clear, in that order, then there's some gray area:

1. Titus Andronicus
2. Fang Island
3. Sleigh Bells
------
4. Broken Bells
5. Harlem
6. Vampire Weekend
7. Adam Green
8. Mynabirds
9. Local Natives
10. The Black Keys

BLE told me about Harlem Hippies a month or two ago. It was solid.

Spoon is overrated.

I hated that Phoenix album.

Really liked the Crystal Castles.

Good list.

Pretty happy they didn't disappoint. They have sort of slid into my #2 spot over the last three years or so and stay firmly entrenched there now. Seeing them in August is going to be pretty badass.

I am pretty sick of Vampire Weekend.
5/24/2010 1:18 PM
Yeah, I hated that Phoenix album, too. And agreed about Spoon...I'm afraid that's where the National might be heading. Ridiculously competent, but a little too precise and calculated.

I hear you...I really, really dislike their shtick...and I know I'd hate them all on a personal level...but I have to admit I kind of dig the sound...

I hope that isn't the case with the National... Ga Ga Ga Ga's success was the beginning of the end for Spoon.

Yeah. I pretty much agree with this. However, my disdain for the shtick has grown too fierce at this point and poisoned the well.
