We were ahead by as much as 20 in the first half, then USC pulled back and we had a very close game where they took the lead on a few occasions, but eventually we pulled back in front and won fairly comfortably.

For the National Championship, I'll be facing off against my best friend on WIS, gopokes24 and his Wyoming Cowboys ("Pokes"):

-----------

We played the Pokes earlier this year, at our place, and won by 3 (the amount that homecourt is worth, on average), so this seems like a very even game.

We play every year during non-conference play, trading home games. I am ahead in the series 5-2, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything in this instance.

gopokes beat me for the services of Chinua Amadee a few seasons back. Now he's a very formidable PG. I also had been somewhat interested in Angel Yazzie, and he is similarly a good PG but has less rebounding ability. The two of them are starters and I would assume that Amadee plays SG, where he will be attempting to neutralize Holcomb.

Understandably, looking at their perimeter ratings, Wyoming shoots a lower proportion of 3-point shots than do the Terps. I generally pack the inside on my defense, anyways, and will not be changing anything, because as I said before last game, "be the threat, not the solution." I don't see a reason to change. We don't match up badly, so there's nothing to cover for.

The biggest threat, in terms of players, that I see, is Kenneth Macha. Following him, I think Marco Harris could present a problem as a defender in the SG slot, and as an offensive player in the PG slot.

We are a better FT shooting team. We shoot 69.6%, which isn't great, but the Pokes shoot 63.4%, which is pretty much awful.

I think we've got a good 65% chance of winning this game. I am nervous. If I lose, my friend will be winning, so it won't be too bad...but I'd really, really prefer to get my first title.

His location does partially explain how he's not been able to find a proper SG, and has had to make do with a plethora of PGs. This is clearly a method that can work, and which can be followed by other coaches in the boondocks.

#10 PG, #47 Overall, ****; no promises. Charles Bane wasn't exactly my first choice (a foreigner, who was riskier but who probably had a higher ceiling), but he was in the top 5 or so of guys I wanted for the PG position. He'll be riding the bench for a year and basically becoming an Abraham Hodges clone, with slightly worse rebounding and ballhandling. Not a likely pro, but a perfectly decent pass-first PG
As a starter, Bane was a failure, but as a backup, he was excellent in his role. I would be shocked to see him drafted, but I'm well aware that he contributed heavily to my team's success the last two seasons.

#13 PG, #95 Overall, ****; no promises. At the moment, James Bourquet is a solid pass-first PG. He could develop into an excellent, well rounded PG, depending on just how high his potential is in athleticism and perimeter. His only long-term, definite weakness is FT shooting
James Bourget was a very good PG for me. I guess he topped out and there wasn't anything to prove, or something, so he a year early. He's not a high pick, though, and we could have theoretically challenged for the Championship again with him, Slick, and Marshall still on our team, but whatever. Anyways he was an excellent defender and contributed to our rebounding pretty well, and shot okay. We could've used him next year. Losing both him and Bane is a bit of a pain. He'll be missed.

#15 SG, #148 Overall, ***; no promises. I really like Michael Holcomb's potential. I think he's going to develop into a really great DI guard for me. It'll take a year or two to see him blossom, of course, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he winds up good enough for the pros. It depends on just how high that potential is for his athleticism and speed. His rebounding is already at a good enough level that it's reasonably strong for his position.
Holcomb was an outstanding signing. As it turned out, the ceiling on his potential for speed and athleticism were at NBA levels. He took about a season to develop but became a great shooter and overall scorer for the team. He's going to be very difficult to replace.

#11 SG, #61 Overall, ****; no promises. I was thinking of going after a Puerto Rican for the SG slot that opened up with Traylor's departure, but decided to play it safe and take what looked like a sure thing. James Marshall should be an excellent outside shooter. I chose him over a Marylander with high potential in speed because if I was going to sacrifice a guard skill, in an SG, it should be passing and not ballhandling (lesson courtesy of Glenn Montero). I expect that his speed will be serviceable, nonetheless...somewhere in the 90 range. Due to his low durability, Marshall will never look as impressive at first glance as he will actually be
I am positively shocked that Marshall declared for the draft. For one thing, at least theoretically, he still had room for improvement. For another, he doesn't seem to have NBA ratings or stats. I carved out a role for him this year as the starting SF, in a three-guard offense, because his passing and ballhandling abilities are decidedly sub-par for a high DI guard, but quite good for a 3. I knew that I was giving up an edge to every team I played, in terms of rebounding, but Blakey did a good job of covering that gap against the backups that he played against. I liked Marshall's FT shooting as a late game option, also. I also liked having the extra 3-point shooter out there. I just can't believe he'd declare for the draft...it's just wacky.
