ODAC Season 30 Conference Tournament Recaps

1st Round

Lynchburg def. Roanoke (120-51)

Hornets obliterate Maroons

Lynchburg jumped out to a 48-4 lead to start the game and cruised to quite possibly the largest margin of victory in ODAC Conference Tournament history. The starters got lots of rest and the bench lead the way as James Jackson poured in 25 points on 7 of 8 three-pointers to go with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Freshman power forward Lester Burke added 17 points for the Hornets who held a 44-10 rebounding edge. Roanoke's Grant Singer scored 11 points in the losing effort.

Randolph-Macon def. Emory & Henry (101-87)

Battle of insects goes to Yellow Jackets

Randolph-Macon shot the lights out and took advantage of their free throw opportunities to upset Emory & Henry in the first round. The Yellow Jackets shot 51.9% from the field, including 59.1% from three-point range, and 80% from the foul line on 32-40 shooting. The Wasps finally got stung by their reliance on the three-ball and did not get to the line nearly enough to offset the Yellow Jacket barrage. Randolph-Macon's David Humphrey led all scorers with 22 points as the Yellow Jackets had every starter in double figures. Emory & Henry was led by Thomas Conway's 17 points, Timothy Bowman added 16 and Noah Banh had 15 in the losing effort.

Bethany def. Bridgewater (68-58)

Bison knock Eagles out of postseason

Bridgewater needed a strong showing in the conference tournament to have hopes of making the Postseason Invitational Tournament, but they failed to show up as Bethany got two early 3-pointers from John Sparks to take a lead they would not give back. The Eagles closed the gap to one a couple of times, but could not get over the hump as they struggled to just 11-21 from the foul line and gave up 52% shooting to the Bison from the field. Julian Stultz scored lead to lead Bethany, Sparks added 12, and Charles Kottwitz had a solid game with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Darrell Dietrich matched Stultz's output with 13 points of his own, but did not get enough help from his teammates.

Hampden-Sydney def. Washington & Jefferson (77-70)

Tigers "steal" victory from Presidents

Hampden-Sydney forced 20 turnovers helping them to overcome a 44-33 rebounding deficit and 47.4% free throw shooting to advance to the quarterfinals. Defense was the key as the Tigers held W&J to 42% shooting from the field while the Presidents were out of position enough to send the Tigers to the line 38 times. W&J's Stephen Blocher lead all scorers with 16 points and backcourt mate Terry Shaw added 14 points but both also had 5 turnovers. Everett Coppa and William Kroeker led 5 Tigers in double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Quarterfinals

#12 Guilford def. Bethany (64-48)

Foul differential dooms Bison

Bethany gave Guilford all it could handle for 10 minutes, then the Quakers began to dominate turning a 21-8 foul advantage into 19-27 free throws versus 3-6 for the Bison. Bethany held a 16-11 lead midway through the first half, but the Quakers would outscore the Bison 23-7 to finish the half and never looked back. Guilford was lead by the William centers - Kelsch with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Spence with 14 points and 8 rebounds - and All-Conference candidate point guard Michael Vaden added 13 points and 7 rebounds as the Quakers dominated the boards 42-27. John Sparks was the only Bison in double figures with 12 points in the losing effort.

Virginia Wesleyan def. Lynchburg (84-78)

Marlins finish off Hornets to inch closer to an NT bid

Virginia Wesleyan looked like they would fall short for most of the game as they were repeatedly turned back until the last 3 minutes when they reeled off 13 unanswered points to advance in a very even matchup. Free throws again were a major factor as both teams managed 29 field goals and 12 three-pointers, but VW converted 14 of their 17 chance against 8 of 10 for the Hornets. Lynchburg's Victor White nailed a three with just under 3 minutes remaining and the Hornets looked ready to advance, but the Marlins had other plans scoring the last 13 points of the game. Mark Ellis led VW with 21 points and Darrell McGee added 15 as the two combined with Richard Sabia to score 9 of those last 13 points. White scored a game high 22 points and Arnold Hawley added 16 points, but the leading scorers for the Hornets were saddled with 4 fouls apiece.

Washington & Lee def. Randolph-Macon (89-73)

Generals pull away late to oust Yellow Jackets

Randolph-Macon gave W&L a scare as Cory Szczepanski scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half and held the lead late before finally surrendering in the last 5 minutes to the Generals. In a game that looked to be thoroughly dominated by W&L, the outcome was much closer than it appeared. The Generals held a 44-26 rebounding edge and outshot the Yellow Jackets 57.8% to 38.6% from the field. The Generals needed a 14-1 run over the last 4 1/2 minutes to finally put the Yellow Jackets to rest. W&L's Arthur Smith led all scorers with 18 points, Justin Riggins added 17, and Danny Lindemann and Chris Talley added 15 apiece sharing the center position.

Eastern Mennonite def. Hampden-Sydney (85-61)

Royals tame Tigers with dominant rebounding effort

Eastern Mennonite outrebounded Hampden-Sydney 26-23 counting just their offensive boards. The Royals ended the game with 58 rebounds and used a 15-0 2nd half run to cruise to an easy victory over an outmatched Tiger team. Both teams struggled from the field as the Royals managed only 37% and the Tigers 36%, but the added advantage of numerous putbacks and free throw opportunities allowed the Royals to move on to the semifinals. Mennonite's win ensures that 3 of the 4 teams remaining in the ODAC semifinals run a two-center starting five. Likely POY Porter Andrews scored a game high 17 points and frontcourt mate Harold Williams added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Royals. Raymond Esteban added 14 point in the winning cause. Rodger Parrott scored 12 points for the Tigers who completed a successful campaign for 1st year coach southpaw13.

Semifinals

Virginia Wesleyan def. #12 Guilford (82-79)

Marlins pull upset on top-ranked Guilford

Darrell McGee was determined to make sure Vriginia Wesleyan would make it to the big dance scoring a game high 20 points and hitting two key free throws late in the game to secure the win and a spot in the ODAC title game. Free throws played a key role in the game as the Marlins converted a rather pedestrian 12 of 19, including 5 misses in the last minute, compared to the Quakers' less than stellar 9-16. Ralph Cassady chipped in 12 points and the Marlin small forwards combined for 22 points in the win. Michael Vaden led 5 Quakers in double figures with 13 points.

An early 8-0 outburst for Guilford had the Quakers thinking easy win, but VW answered with an 8-0 run of their own and followed it with a 12-2 run to take command late in the first half en route to a 52-43 halftime lead. McGee led the way early in the game with 15 points, but he would disappear for much of the second half.

The Marlins got off to a quick start in the 2nd half behind Cassady's two buckets to go up 56-43 and extended the lead to 18 with 9:22 to play when the Marlins seemed to take their foot off the pedal and Guilford began to rally. The Quakers trimmed the deficit to nine over the next 3 minutes. A David Haslett three for the Marlins temporarily stopped the bleeding, but Guilford continued to apply the pressure cutting the lead to 5 on a Vaden steal and lay in with 3:26 . McGee finally reappeared for the Marlins. He nailed a three then fed Cassady for a short jumper to regain control of the game.

Vaden tried to bring the Quakers back scoring the next 5 points with a minute , then things got crazy. VW missed 3 consecutive one-and-ones during which time the Quakers' Philip Barbeau hit one of two free throws and Jamison Truman buried to three to cut it to one with 16 seconds . Once again, Darrell McGee came to the rescue converting two free throws and the Marlins survived two Quaker three-point attempts and two more missed free throws down the stretch to advance. The loss dropped Guilford to #20 in the polls and will severely damage their seed for the NT.

Eastern Mennonite def. Washington & Lee (75-56)

Generals can't keep up with Royals

Washington & Lee successfully slowed down Eastern Mennonite for 36 minutes keeping the Royals within their sights, but a change in tempo late resulted in the wrong outcome as Mennonite pulled away with a 16-4 run to end the game and likely send the Generals to the PIT. In a game that was billed as a battle of the top two centers in the conference, it was the supporting cast that made the difference. Small forward Raymond Esteban led the Royals and all scorers with 16 points, Darrell Studebaker added 14 and POY center Porter Andrews scored 9 and added 12 rebounds in the win. The Generals were led by Arthur Smith's 14 points and Chris Talley's 13 points. 2nd Team All-Conference center Danny Lindemann added 10 points in his battle with Andrews.

It looked good early for Washington & Lee as they either were tied or held the lead for 11:35 to start the game and continued to lead late in the first half until Esteban drilled a halfcourt buzzer beater to provide Eastern Mennonite with a 33-30 edge at the break. The Generals kept it close in the second half keeping the Royals within a 2-3 possession striking distance until the four minute mark. Mennonite's Harold Williams hit 1-2 free throws to bump the lead to 8 and the Generals changed tempo in an attempt to get back in the game. Unfortunately it backfired as the Royals rattled off the next 6 points to effectively put the game away. Free throws played a major role in the game as Mennonite converted 25-32 compared to W&L's paltry 5-9.

ODAC Season 30 Conference Tournament Recap

Championship Game

Virginia Wesleyan def. Eastern Mennonite (98-91)

Marlins ride hot foul shooting to ODAC title and automatic bid

Virginia Wesleyan hit 88.5% of their free throws on 23-26 and had an unstoppable offense that saw 6 players hit double figures in knocking off Eastern Mennonite. The Royals struggled from the line hitting just 55.6% on 15-27 accounting for the final tally deficit. Richard Sabia and Darrell McGee continue to be the engines that drive the Marlins pouring in 16 points apiece in the win. Raymond Esteban led all scorers with 20 points and Britt McAbier and Porter Andrews each had 19 points for the Royals in the loss. Starting shooting guard William Ledford was saddled with early foul trouble and saw very little action which hurt Mennonite, but not as much as their poor foul shooting coming back to haunt them.

VW came out firing and did not slow down for the entire first half shooting 20-34 for the first 20 minutes. Mennonite stayed with them initially, but at 14-14 with 14:07 the Marlins took control of the game and forced the Royals to play catchup. Following a 7-0 run to establish the lead, the Marlins put together a 9-0 run to go up by 13 and held on for a 53-41 edge at the half.

Calvin Askew assured VW that they would come out firing in the second half as well burying an early three for a 15-point lead. The Marlins maintained a healthy lead for much of the final frame and bumped it to 17 on a David Haslett three-pointer with 7:31 and matched it at 17 on a Mark Ellis tap in with 4:27 . The Royals put up a valiant effort and kept fighting but ran out of time. Esteban nailed a three-pointer to cut it to five late, but with only seven seconds , it was too little, too late.
