I got my three targeted stars, and two good role-players. I will have two open slots next year, unless someone declares early for the draft. The team will be very young but full of tremendous potential, and should start off the season with some difficulty but turn it around by the end, and hopefully make the NT. We're going to be starting two freshmen and three sophomores, with some experienced players in support roles. I'm looking forward to watching this team develop.

Self-grade: A

I am proud of the restraint that I showed in terms of picking my targets and my battles. A lot of coaches in my position would overshoot and make themselves vulnerable. I did not make that mistake and I got what I needed out of this recruiting season. I am very happy about that.

Would I have gotten my three targets if the early entries had not declared, as they did? Well, I would've had $45k less than the $115k that I did, this year. I would have gone after the same guys. Maybe I would've won both battles, maybe not. No point in dwelling, I suppose. I had more of a margin for error on each, that's for sure.

[Redacted bad sportsmanship and taunting regarding the 'Hoos and VD.]

[edit:]

Just for fun, because I knew I'd win the battle anyways:

...and he did sign.

I am very keen to see the remaining potential for Brian Hill. If he still has high potential in ball handling and defense, he will be a quality PG for me. If not, he'll just be an okay backup for four years.

Next year's recruiting of course depends upon if any of my guys leave early (I'm looking at you, Adam Gill). If not, I will have the money for 2 scholarships, plus whatever postseason money the ACC provides. Apparently, I have to worry about UVA because VandyDave/VandyDuke with his string of PIT appearances, at best, refuses to cede four and five star local players to me and Georgetown. That means I have to worry about both him and Georgetown. It depends on who spawns locally, of course, and I won't see that for another day, and I won't be seeing the potential on those guys for another 6 weeks, but I would like someone to back up the SF spot, whether that is a SF, a poor-passing and ball-handling SG, or a quick and athletic PF with sub-par rebounding for his position. I can probably get by without recruiting another big man or guard, but if I were to find someone I'd probably want a quality big, because I'm pretty sure that Gill will leave early, and I'd want to phase out Wilbur Teed if I had the option.

Well, well, well - guess who's recruiting class was just ranked #13 by CollegiateInsider.com? Nice job! Everybody in the Athletic Department is really excited - I think I'm even getting the administration behind what you're doing. Keep up the good work!

They took away credit for the unfilled scholarship, I'm sure. Teed and Diehl aren't exactly worldbeaters, either.

Well, Millard Hargraves is starting right off the bat and knows practically nothing about our system, so that'll be messy. At least Nolan Lyons knows the press okay. I didn't look at what Wilbur Teed knew - clearly he doesn't fit my team's needs like a glove, but he'll have to do in his role. Jaco should adjust pretty well to the team, but he's going to be a backup.

Hey coach, you asked me to give you my thoughts on how everyone looked after the offseason and I think I've seen enough to do that. I only jotted down things that stood out to me...

Scott blakey:
athleticism: limited upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside

brice Diehl:
athleticism: big upside
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: big upside
durability: big upside
rebounding: big upside
shot blocking: big upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside

Adam Gill:
ball handling: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
speed: limited upside
[he's got a little room to grow but should probably top out after this year.]

brent Grady:
ball handling: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: big upside
perimeter shooting: limited upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside
[he's in good shape for the future...I only wonder where he will top out in rebounding.]

Millard Hargraves:
defensive fundamentals: big upside
perimeter shooting: big upside
stamina: big upside

brian Hill:
athleticism: big upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
stamina: big upside
[ah, well, that's disappointing. I guess he's going to be a mediocre backup for his entire career.]

bobby Jaco:
athleticism: big upside
durability: big upside
perimeter shooting: big upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: big upside

Jonathan Knipp:
athleticism: limited upside
defensive fundamentals: limited upside
durability: limited upside
low post moves: limited upside
passing: limited upside
rebounding: limited upside
shot blocking: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside

Nolan Lyons:
passing: big upside
perimeter shooting: big upside
rebounding: big upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: limited upside

Harrison Parsons:
speed: limited upside
[hmm...I would've expected him to have a high ceiling on athleticism and defense. I think this is going to render him a backup, from now on.]

Wilbur Teed:
defensive fundamentals: big upside
durability: big upside
low post moves: big upside
shot blocking: big upside
speed: limited upside
stamina: big upside
ft shooting: big upside

Russell Milligan:
rebounding: limited upside
speed: limited upside
ft shooting: limited upside

Anyway, maybe some guidelines for practice time? If I notice anything else, I'll let you know.

Our defense wasn't great here, in this second exhibition, and our offense was far from efficient, yet we somehow won the game. Turnovers and offensive rebounds, looks like.

I expect our team to start off the season as a top 75 team or so, and finish it in the top 40.

Hmm, Parsons played really poorly here. We started off the game well (with a 20-point lead or something) but it evened out eventually and then we fell behinid.

Gill was staying in for too long, while very tired, but Teed was really terrible...

Gosh, I don't know what to do with this group for now. I guess I just have to wait it out.

Just an observation here CB, but I'll be curious to see how the FCP performs with such a stamina-challenged team....and clearly the youth and low IQs will help muddy the waters a bit as well. GL

Yes, we are not an ideal fit for the system, unfortunately, but this is a rebuilding year. I'm just hoping that we start playing well enough by the end of it to squeak in to the NT.

I fully expected to lose this game, so it's not a big deal. Good game, pokes.

Chinua Amadee and Angel Yazzie were drafted.

Coach, Lyons won't miss any time due to his sprained ACL. I'd say he's around 50% right now.

My recommendation would be to sit him and let's see how he recovers. Putting him out there now could lead to another injury and I'm not even sure how effective he'd be.
