You're right there, Chuck.....Have to win the battles to the puck and keep the puck in the Ottawa zone. They can't play like this if they want to go far in these playoffs.

I just can't figure this team out sometimes Donald. Why Feds is playing instead of Rupp, and why they're even talking extension with Gonchar?(Other than the pp). And where was Ponikerovski last night? He was invisible. TK, Sid, Kunitz, Orpik, Geno, Talbot, Staal, there were a few guys who turned it up a notch. The others looked disinterested. It just seems that if we play a team that can clog up the neuteral zone, we don't know what to do to beat them.

chuck, all the guys you mentioned who turned it up have one thing in common that many others on the team don't: they are equally as effective dumping and retrieving the puck as they are when they carry it in. Against a team trying to clog up the middle, you have to have a good puck retrieval plan because carrying the puck through the neutral zone is playing right into their hands and creates a ton of turnovers and odd-man rushes.

It was more than just not getting into Ottawa's zone....The Pens lost most of the battles for loose pucks and had a hard time getting it out of their own end....They are going to have to dump it in and go get it if they want to take the Sens out of their game, they might not be able to play their style if Ottawa keeps making them give the puck away.

We'll see what happens tonight, but I predict the Pens will come out flying and take this game.

Sutton should get suspended for that hit on Leopold. He his feet and led with his elbow, gunning for his head. Can't believe there wasn't even a call on that play!

Great win by the boys tonight though. Can't ever recall a game with hitting that fierce.

Good to see the Pens win a low scoring PLAYOFF game. I thought the Sens would have more chance to win 2-1 games but the Sens win the 5-4 game GO-FIGURE!!

I don't know, Chuck....I don't think he was aiming for a head shot and he never stuck the elbow out. I can't figure out how Leopold didn't see that moose coming at him. Sutton did leave his feet and probably should have been called for that, but I don't think he'll get suspended. Hope Leopold is alright for Sunday though.

That early goal could have been a killer....Nice to see the boys let it go and play hard the rest of the way....Have to keep that up the rest of the series.

I don't think they could have called a head shot or an elbow on the Sutton hit. But does this qualify?

Rule 43 - Charging

43.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean the actions of a player or goalkeeper who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.

A minor, major or a major and a game misconduct shall be imposed on a player who charges a goalkeeper while the goalkeeper is within his goal crease.

A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease area. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with a goalkeeper. However, incidental contact, at the discretion of the Referee, will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.

43.2 Minor Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a minor penalty, based on the degree of violence of the check, to a player or goalkeeper guilty of charging an opponent.

43.3 Major Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a major penalty, based on the degree of violence of the check, to a player or goalkeeper guilty of charging an opponent (see 43.5).

43.4 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player or goalkeeper attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent by charging.

43.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed.

43.6 Fines and Suspensions – When a major penalty and a game misconduct is assessed for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) shall be imposed.

If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule B29/B).

I don't think it's a penalty. And he should have had his head up!
4/18/2010 12:44 AM
Gotta disagree cenquist. Sutton his feet to deliver the check. Yes, Leoplold should have had his head up, but it still should have been a penalty.

Funny how Sid is yet again answering the critics who said he DIDN'T elevate his game last season in the playoffs. He pretty much single-handedly beat the Sens on one shift last game.

That being said, the Pens are going to have to pick up their play if they want to go deep, because if they were facing a stronger team (no disrespect to the Sens), they'd be down 2-0 and not looking very good. I think they're really feeling the absence of the Rob Scuderi-Hal Gill pair on the back end.
