Okay, we are starting a new series on the overnight, at the Midnight Outfield. They play in the Baker Bowl, so we should be seeing a lot of runs from both teams in these 3 games. They come in with a record of 49-47, second place in the AL West, 6 games back. We are now 52-44, 12 games back and in third place in the AL Central. Target Best has finally passed Balking To New Orleans, and leads them by one game.

In the first game they are pitching 1904 Weldon Henry (9-12, 5.26). We have Frank Corridon (4-2, 3.00) on the mound.

Thats a lot better than I guessed it would have been with all those moves
I've had 52 players on my roster so far, including one who never got into a game. 30 of the 52 have been pitchers.

And the pattern continues, W-L-W-L. We won at 6 PM, and now we lost in the overnight. Midnight Outfield beat us just now, 6-2. First really bad game for Frank Corridon, who took the loss and allowed 5 runs in 6.1 innings. Weldon Henley went all the way on a 5 hitter, allowing 2 runs (1 earned).

Boudreau had an RBI single in the third to start the scoring, and it was still 1-0 after 5 innings. Bottom 6 now, and MO gets 2 runs. They follow that with 3 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th, and lead 6-1. We scored our second run in the 9th on a passed ball just before Leach grounded out to end the game.

Sam Crawford with 4 hits including a triple, raising his batting average to .388. We had just 5 hits with 2 of them from Simpson.

Game 2 of the series on Tuesday afternoon. MO goes with Jack Taylor (13-7, 3.03). We are sending Sam Leever (1-0, 4.61) to the mound.
1/10/2023 1:43 AM
L-W-L-W-L-W, 6 games in a row now. We just won 7-6 over Midnight Outfield. Leever was not so good, but we rallied from 6-2 down with 2 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th, and then got a run in the 10th to give Fetters the win and a save from Poncedeleon who jumped in and pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th. GREAT WIN!

MO took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second on RBI hits from Shugart, King Kelly (2 RBI) and Anderson. A SF from Kelly in the 4th made it 5-0. Bill Dickey with a 2 run HR in the 6th cut it to 5-2, but Bobby Bonilla's RBI single against Ray Collins in the 7th made it 6-2.

Things looked almost hopeless for the Rebels, but they came roaring back in the 8th anyway. Suitcase Simpson's RBI double knocked Taylor from the game in favor of Rasmussen. Dennis got an easy groundball from Leach to plate another run before Hosmer hit into a DP. Castillo came in and gave us a 1-2-3 bottom 8. Top 9 now, down 2. With no outs Tris Speaker has a 2 run double to tie the game, and we have 3 chances to get him in and take the lead. But after Boudreau walked, Cullenbine flew out and Dickey hit into another DP.

Bottom 9 and Fetters in. A one out single for Marte. They have Piano Legs Hickman bunt Marte to second, 2 outs now. Reggie Smith up, and Fetters gets him to can of corn to CF. We got to the 10th. Burleigh Grimes on to pitch. Simpson walks, but Leach now hits into another DP, that's 3 in 3 innings now. Hosmer singles. Buxton bats for Helms and walks. Schofield bats for Fetters and singles home the go ahead run. Reggie Smith's throw is up the 3B line and Schofield takes second. Speaker is intentionally walk to load the bases, and Boudreau flies out to shallow LF. We wasted opportunities there, BUT, we got a run.

With Fetters gone for a pinch hitter, who can Weaver bring in? He decides on mop up man Poncedeleon, whose fatigue is at 95. He immediately gives up a single to Bonilla and a double to Jerry Denny. Second and third, no outs. We are in deep trouble. Here's what happened next...
.
B.Robidoux enters the game as a pinch-hitter for B.Grimes.
B.Robidoux grounds out to SS.
II F.Shugart grounds out to 3B.
J.Oquendo lines out to 2B.
.
Daniel somehow got out of the jam and got the save!

Three hits and a walk for Speaker with 2 RBI, and Dickey with 2 for 5, HR, 2 runs, 2 RBI.

THREE STARS
1. Daniel Poncedeleon - save in the 10th.
2. Dick Schofield - game winning hit.
3A. Tris Speaker - 2 singles, double, walk, 2 RBI
3B - Bill Dickey - 2 for 5, HR, 2 runs, 2 RBI

Rubber game of this 3 game series this evening. MO is throwing Bugs Raymond (13-8, 3.33). Carlos Martinez (0-1, 9.53) gets his second start. Wait till he sees that RF wall in the Baker Bowl.
1/10/2023 2:53 PM
Finally broke that pattern and won 2 in a row. We beat MO 5-4 and took the series 2-1. Carlos Martinez gets the win with 3 ER allowed in 5 innings. Okay, it is The Baker Bowl. Alcala, Hudson and Fetters finished up, Fetters with his 10th save. We got Raymond for 5 runs in 7 innings and gave him his 9th loss.

We opened with a stick in the top of the first. RBI single from Cullenbine drives in The Grey Eagle, who had doubled. Bottom 4, Midnight Oil tallies 3 runs on a 2 run double by Shugart and an RBI hit by King Kelly. Cullenbine swats a 2 run HR to tie the game at 3-3 in the 5th. Then we come right back with another 2 runs in the 6th on RBIs from Hosmer and Buxton pinch hitting for Martinez. We are up 5-3 now.

Bottom 6 and Shugart doubles home a run to make it 5-4 us. The bullpen shuts down MO for the last 3 innings as we hold on to win the game and the series.

THREE STARS
1. Roy Cullenbine - single, HR, walk, 3 RBI
2. Tris Speaker - double, 3 singles, 2 runs
3. Mike Fetters - scoreless 9th inning for the save.

New series on the overnight, we host the hapless Thespians for 3 games. We are 6-0 against them this season. They are 33-66 in last place in the AL East, 25 games out. We are now 54-45. We've got to 10 games over earlier in the season, but keep sliding back. Here's our chance to get past that barrier and maybe get to 12 games over .500 if we can sweep these bad actors again.

They will send out Billy Rhines (9-17, 4.28) for the first game. We are going with Roy Mitchell (13-4, 2.97).
1/10/2023 6:24 PM
We beat the Thespians 4-3 despite the computer manager making a bad move IMO. It pinch hit for Mitchell in a 1-1 game in the bottom of the 6th and it almost cost us the game, but we went ahead in the bottom of the 8th and held on. Ray Collins got the win and Mike Fetters with his 11th save. Frank Williams took the loss in relief.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40652265&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

The game was 0-0 until the Thespians broke through for a run in the 4th on a SF from John Berardino. We tied it in the 5th on an RBI double by Boudreau, his 42nd double of the season. Bottom 6 we had bases loaded and 2 outs after an intentional walk to Schofield, and Buxton hit for Mitchell and flew out. Castillo came in and got out of a 2 on 2 out jam in the 7th when he retired Dummy Hoy to end the inning.

Bottom 7 now, and we take a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Cuullenbine. Top 8 nad Castillo gives up a 2 out 2 run HR to Mark Reynolds. Thespians lead 3-2. Collins comes in and gives up a single, but then gets Terry Kennedy to end the inning. Bottom 8 now, down a run. Defensive replacement Harry Agganis leads off with a single, and Schofield also singles. Ruggiano bats for Collins and hits into a force play at second. First and third now, one out. Speaker walks to load 'em up. Al Albuquerque comes in to pitch. Boudreau fouls out to 1B. Two outs now, Cullenbine up. Roy singles through the hole to drive in Agganis and Ruggiano and give us a 4-3 lead.

Top 9 now, Fetters on. They also have Schofield, and he pinch hits and grounds out. Roger Connor then pinch hits and walks. Billy Hamilton runs for Connor and steals second. Hoy grounds to second and Hamilton takes third with 2 outs. Joe Mathes bats for DeShields and is intentional walked to face Joey Gallo. Gallo does his usual and strikes out swinging as Fetters comntinues his superb season with his 11th save, lowering his ERA to 2.08.

THREE STARS
1. Roy Cullenbine - 2 for 5, 3 RBI, game winning hit.
2. Tris Speaker - 3 for 3, 2 walks, double, 2 runs scored.
3. Mike Fetters - scoreless 9th for the save.

Gam 2 of the series Wednesday afternoon. We are throwing Jack Doescher Jr. (2-0, 1.42). They go with hard luck Jake Weimer (8-17, 2.79). Two southpaws.
1/11/2023 1:55 AM
It's been a long time since we got on a roll, but we just beat the Thespians 7-2 to win our 4th game in a row. Doscher went 8 innings for the win, allowed just 3 hits and 2 runs, although he did walk 6. Weimer took the loss and fell to 8-18 despite a sparkling 2.90 ERA.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40654485&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

Reynolds had a SF top 1 to give them a 1-0 lead. We got 2 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th to take a 4-1 lead. In the 4th Cullenbine scored on a WP and then Simpson singled home a run. Simpson playing 1B for the first time to give Hosmer a rest. In the 5th Cullenbine crushed his 21st HR, a 2 run shot.

Top 7, and Tatum doubles home a run with 2 outs to cut the lead to 4-2. But we came right back with a 3spot in the bottom of the frame. A 2 run triple by Leach, who then scored on a E from Reynolds at 3B. 7-2 now, and that's how it ended, Ray Collins came in for the 9th inning and finished up. Speaker took a rare collar going 0 for 5.

THREE STARS
1. Roy Cullenbine - 3 for 3 and a walk, HR, 3 runs, 2 RBI
2. Jack Doscher Jr. - 8 innings, 2 runs, Win.
3. Tommy Leach - 2 run triple, run scored

Series finale this evening, the Thespians go with Jim Bouton (5-19, 4.47). We'd love to get him to 20. On the bump for us will be Sam Leever (1-0, 5.03).
1/11/2023 1:47 PM
Thank goodness we didn't lose to these guys!

We finished off a 3 game sweep of the Thespians with a 6-0 shutout. Sam Leever goes all the way on a 4 hitter and now stands at 2-0, 3.45. He just needed 99 pitches, 11 per inning, to dispose of the Thespians and take our record against them to 9-0 on the season. Jim Bouton was pounded for 6 ER in 3.2 innings. Glad to see that, I had a personal run in with Bouton about 35 years ago that I won't get in to. Not a good guy.

https://www.whatifsports.com/slb/Boxscore.aspx?gid=40656669&pid=1&pbp=0&tf=10

Buxton singled in 2 runs in the second to give us the lead. Cullenbine with a solo HR in the third to make it 3-0. Then in the 4th we got RBI hits from Leach, Schofield and Boudreau to make it 6-0. Speaker was off for the day, with Buxton playing CF and Schofield batting leadoff while Helms rested. We got 10 hits, but only Buxton had more than one as he went 2 for 3.

THREE STARS
1. Sam Leever - complete game 4 hit shutout.
2. Byron Buxton - 2 for 3, walk, run, 2 RBI
3. Roy Cullenbine - HR, walk, run, RBI

1/11/2023 6:18 PM
Okay, we are now 57-45, 12 games over .500. I think that's the most games we've been over .500 this season. The team slash is now .287/.359/.412, a .771 OPS. I'd like to know what it is without the pitchers. We now have 8 of our 13 position players hitting over .300.

The team ERA for the season is an unimpressive 54.54, but the ERA of the pitchers who are currently on the roster is 3.16.

New series starts on the overnight as we play 3 games at LA Suckerpunch. Their home park is Wrigley Field. They are one game ahead of us at 58-44, and lead the AL West by 5 games over Midnight Outfield. The first game we face 1963 Koufax (16-8, 3.39). We are going with Carlos Martinez (1-1, 7.59) who was pretty good last time out.

1/11/2023 6:28 PM
The winning streak is over. Koufax just shut us out 4-0, although he only had 3 strikeouts. I would bet that he never pitched a real life shutout with only 3 strikeouts. Carlos Martinez took the loss, but he struck out 9 in 6 innings.

Their 2 big hitters, 1988 Gibson and 1930 Ruth, both homered with the bases empty. Adam Dunn had the other 2 RBI. Lou Boudreau went 1 for 3 with his 43rd double, and a walk.
