So would you be willing to lose all your 85+ for a bunch of 60s?
2/10/2010 4:38 PM
And why are you choosing 60? Is that YOUR magic number? Mine is 40. Anything below 40 doesn't work for me.

I would if it turned it into a more realistic distribution.

I don't believe you. Not one bit.

What's the problem here?

Clearly comparing to Season 1 is the best way to determine if everything is correct for all facets of HBD.

Once again, I don't care that I have a 55 FI coach for 1.5 million. Whatever the market price is. But what shouldn't happen is an insufficient number of FI coaches be generated. And while we are on the subject, how exactly does it make sense that a 80+ rated fielding coach turns downa $4 mill a year job to accept a $600k job as a ML bench coach?

And you've chosen some magic number for what a FI should be. How did you determine this number?

And, while were on the subject, I have tough time finding CF/2B/SS with good range/glove ratings and a decent bat. Should I be forced to play fielders who can't hit?

Not the point. The point is: Should you throw a pitcher out there to play CF because there are no 2B/CF available for you to hire?

100% to the point. Other people signed them. But there wasn't 32 of them so I got out. WifS should create more, right?

Yes. Exactly. If there were no players that were avaialble for you to hire, then there is a problem. It is similiar to when there are no training camp pitchers available to hire. They don't need to be remotely good, they just need to have a pulse.

I'm not saying that each world should have a wealth of good fielding SS or 90 rated pitching coaches. I'm saying that in all of the major leagues we should be able to find someone that actually coaches FI for a living, even if he doesn't do it very well.

To sum this up :

My position: There should be more than enough coaches whose profession is Fielding Instructor for when I go to hire one. They don't have to be good, but that should be their job.

Your position: Its an owner's fault if they don't budget enough to hire a fielding instructor and if they don't they should have to throw a Hi A pitching coach in that position with a FI of 15.

60-85 seemed like a decent range for a mid-level coach. I'm not saying there shouldn't be anyone below 60 - but we should n't have half the coaches below 60. I used 45 as the extreme low end because that's where a coach will start having an actual negative affect on the development of your players.

patrick, please add 15x60 FI to GAP and change all their 85+ FI to 55.

cjl, you're getting a FI. He's just not meeting YOUR standards. Much like I have a CF. He's just not meeting my standards.

Don't you see the similarities?

That's not what I said. I said I would be all for it, if it meant for a realistic distribution. Removing all 85+ and changing them into 55 rated coaches will skew it way too much to the low end.

What do you think the distribution of FI coaches should look like?

How do you know this? I just said I had a 51 and my players improved. Is there a huge drop-off between 45 and 51?

"There are a dozen or so coaches capable of being a fielding instructor (especially as they age) looking for alternative roles throughout the minors.

That's the correct answer. Too bad it didn't stay as such.

Again, you're choosing a number as "low end" without any evidence to prove that this is correct. I've had "low end", by your standards, FI and my players improved.
