My bet is it's more likely you're mispronouncing it...

The problem to me is that OAV is a measure of events, not an event itself. I don't see how a rating can effect a measure directly. It seems to me that ratings would determine events only. It's not like hitters' splits affect batting average. They affect whether events become hits or outs (along with a whole bunch of other things obviously). The batting average is a measure of the effect, not the effect itself.

If PC rating determines something, it must, by definition impact some part of the formula that determines events. It cannot just "affect the OAV". This makes zero sense.

I don't understand - if splits, for example, affect whether events become hits or outs, why wouldn't you say that splits affect batting average? If they impact the frequency of the individual inputs (events), wouldn't that mean they affect the output (measures)? Or am I not reading your post correctly?

I think you are, but slightly missing what my point is. Supposedly the developers say that that PC affects OAV. My contention is that's not possible directly. You are right in that the splits affect events. The contention that a rating directly affects a measure is what doesn't make sense. My contention is that's what they say.

Ratings combinations affect outcomes of events. OAV only measures the events.

I think of it like this. It's like saying if a batter tends to hit the ball more squarely, his batting average will go up. The problem is that his batting average doesn't measure whether or not he's hit the ball squarely, it only measure the outcomes of events. His batting average depends on a bunch of other things too. The likely indirect result of hitting the ball more squarely is increased batting average, but not if randomness causes him to hit more balls right at a fielder (just look at BABIP for real MLBers). My point in a ratings sense is that PC probably causes the pitcher to throw certain pitches to certain players and that the combination of the various ratings result in a slightly more likely outcome of an out versus another event. OAV is a statistic. The ratings don't determine statistics. They determine the outcome of events. The statistic is the measure, not the outcome.

Long-winded, but that's how my warped mind works.

Makes sense. For in-depth analytical purposes as to how all the ratings function and play off each other this is a good start at how to look at it, but for most of the casual "what does PC do?" type questions on here a simple "it affects OAV" works fine.

I find an interesting part of that answer to be the implication that it doesn't affect BB% at all. Not that I think you would really expect it to, but still, something worth noting.

It does from my view. I do understand the developers won't (and shouldn't) share exactly how the engine works. The response to your inquiry only confirms my suspicions that the phrase they use doesn't make sense, but there's probably a good legitimate reason that it doesn't.
