I made a recruit scraper tool for HD - update v1.2 Topic

gill, a lot of C- and lower D 1 schools will still get drop down replies from the top of the D 1 recruit pool FWIW

this is true, however, generally there are at most a couple players in that range you have a chance in hell of signing, due to the big boys taking them first. those couple are revealed after recruiting is underway, so i really don't think the mass phone call situation applies. although, maybe some people recruit differently. and i should say, you get those backup messages all the way up to a b-. well, at a b-, i know i had 0 chance at those players, the 5 stars. maybe a d- school gets it on 1 stars and has a chance. but its definitely circumstantial and hard to define who you'd actually want to call.

gillispie, thanks for that excellent description.  I think I can really help you guys save some time, which is what I'm all about.  First off, I use a java library called httpunit.  I think it's probably a little outdated now, but it works for what I want.  Apache's httpclient looks like it'd be better, but I've been too lazy to switch.

I started working on a full blown HD recruit tool last night (as opposed to the simple csv exporter that I just made).  I'm basically taking my GD recruit tool and converting it for HD and will then slowly reimplement many of the features.  Here's a breakdown of what it'll do at first
  • Grab all the recruits for whatever divisions you specify and display them in an easily searchable, sortable, and filterable table.  (it will show which division a recruit came from)
  • Update recruits during recruiting for the latest considering/signed info.  (may be able to get it to notify you about new dropdowns)
  • Flag the recruits you're interested in so you can easily find them again later.
  • Save each season's info (including flagged recruits) to a separate file to easily manage multiple teams.
  • Differentiate scouted and unscouted recruits.  Show bold names and colored attributes.  Search/filter based on scouted.
  • Provide extra columns for custom equations to rate recruits per position.  You can then easily sort on those ratings.
  • Click on a row to open that recruit's profile page in your browser.
I'll publish the tool when all that's done.  Then I'll add the following
  • Mass recruit phone calls (already do this with GD).  Check a box for the players you want to recruit, then select Mass Recruit->Phone Call and hit go.
  • Process recruit responses for dropdown (already process responses in GD for potential).  Then have an indicator showing whether or not that recruit will drop down.

Another thing I might be able to work on later is the equation that WIS uses to rank recruits (and how they determine which ones will drop down for you).  I actually figured this out for GD using a genetic algorithm.  In GD though, it's like all the recruits that will drop down for you dropped down at the beginning of recruiting, so it's not very helpful to know how WIS ranks recruits.  It sounds like it'd be very helpful in HD though.

I don't get it..  The guy is on here trying to help some players out and some people go out and bash him for it.  Some people are never happy....
Looks like he's trying to help his wallet out.

+1, if he really wanted to help people out, he'd make it free, or at least give it to those who thinks are most deserving...I don't take exception with the "tool" (which I find to be rather pointless/worthless), I take exception with the fact that he's charging a $10 "donation" for it...I want to challenge everyone that buys this thing in non-con...suckers.

the dude doesn't even play HD, but he's spending his time making a tool that plenty of coaches will find to be helpful and time-saving
people had asked him to make the tool, he's not just doing this simply to cash in... and his time is worth something, right? he's making a product, and you aren't obliged to buy it.

if you want to say that you don't think that the product is worth it/not valuable, why can't you express that in a less aggressive way? did yatzr ever do anything to offend you?

I used yatzr's tool back in my GD days and it was great.

And oh yea, it was free for quite a while too. These kind of coding takes time. Imagine if you hire  a programmer to code stuff, the cost would be well into the thousands if not much more. And plus, if yatz provides a qualify product, what's wrong with him charging money for it? He's not forcing you to buy it, if you don't like it, just don't buy it and don't use it.

Having said that, I don't plan to use the tool unless I see some other additions.

this thread is solid

Just trying to show the other side of the coin here...he's trying to make it seem like he's doing a favor for everyone, yet he's charging money for it...I mean let's call a spade a spade here.

Right.  I guess I just don't understand the indignation.  For the sake of argument, let's say his only goal is to make money.  So what?  It's clearly a product that a lot of people used in GD, so why wouldn't it receive the same positive reaction from HD users?  And even if it doesn't, so what?

So you're saying this thread is only meant for positive responses? lol

I wouldn't say that, but you're attempting to make yatzr seem like a bad guy trying to take money from people without giving them anything in return

Because putting hard work into something and asking for a small donation for the service(for a game he doesn't even play mind you) is a horrible thing, eh colonels?

Many of the "suckers" that are interested in these tools are a lot better at this game than colonels btw. If you don't like it don't buy it, no need to fling poo everywhere.

I'm not much for spreadsheets and will probably continue to eyeball recruits. That said,  please ignore this douche...he takes asshattery to a new level in every thread he posts in.

I would be fine with rational responses.
