It would solve so many issues with the game if each division stayed within their own level when recruiting.Recruiting battles outside of divisions just adds to the unneeded frustration of the game. Either a D-2 team getting jumped by a D-1 team late or a D-1 team losing out to a D-2 school.

You call it an issue. I call it a challenge which adds to the strategy of recruiting.

It's fine as it is.
If you had put a whole bunch of effort into a player, a player that could've made a huge impact and then all of a sudden there was a D-1 school that decided to come in late, because they needed a 12th player, you would be fine with that? Despite putting in 20 HVs and all of those APs?
It’s strategic. Stuff happens. It makes the game challenging, which is competitive. The game isn’t singling out one person. Everyone has a chance to get their guy taken by a D1 school. It’s like real life. It’s risk-reward.
It's not competitive, it's dumbing it down. If you had to do more than just go in on a player and cross your fingers and hope some higher division school doesn't take him then that would be competitive. Ya know, like actually battling other teams in your own division for recruits. Use some strategy. Not sit and wait and hope the HD fairy gives you your player.

I disagree about D3 teams beating out D1 teams. If a guy is going to be an absolute scrub his whole career at a D1 school, some would rather be a star his whole career at a D3 school. Also, there are job firings?
Yeah why take a free education by playing D1 when you can rack up a mountain of debt.
For the record on this topic I coach HS Fastptich. I have had multiple players in the last 2 years sign with a D3 private school in Minnesota or North Dakota because their financial aid package beat the scholarship offer from a D1 school. Now obviously most basketball teams in D1 are offering full rides and there is a legit pro league after their college sport but it does happen in athletics. More than most people realize.

In fact it happened in football here as well. A player chose to go to St. John's in Minnesota instead of taking an offer to another school who offered a 50% scholarship. The FA at some of these private schools is amazing and that 50k for a year disappears in a hurry and it becomes cheaper than the University of Minnesota.
Yeah I'm sure that's true for some of the 'lower tiered' athletics. But for basketball they all get full rides.
And as a former D3 Track and Field 'athlete', I can tell you that most of us didn't get sh*t.
Were you a former D3 track kid who could have played D1? Did you go to a school that competes for national titles in that sport?

As a head coach I can tell you this exact conversation happened last year with one of my players.
Financial Aid office- "Here is your package of $35,000 a year."
Parent- "We were hoping for a little better."
FA- "We offer jobs here in the summer that can close that gap."
Parent- "Well as a softball player coach would like her playing over the summer not working."
FA- "Oh you play softball, let us re run those numbers."
*5 min later*
FA- "Here is your package for $48,000 a year"

Oooo the HD fairy! She does exist! I wake up every morning during recruiting and when I check my team, sometimes she leaves me a gift for my effort! And sometimes that lil ***** just bypasses me completely!

Sometimes i love her, sometimes I hate her. But she works on her own time schedule. I look for her every six hours. I'm a mad little boy when she decides not to show up. Never get your hopes up too soon. She's not dependable and she will rip your heart out whenever she pleases!

Sure. That's softball. But that's not D1 Basketball.

Or, you could divide your resources and figure out the best way to land a player after the D1 guys raid the recruits you are on.

Or you could just put all your resources and pray.

Or you could make a claim that doesn't happen and then complain about how dumb it is that it happens.

I won 2 titles at D3, I know how it works and what to do to win. I think it's a boring system that is not fun to play and is not very competitive.

I'd say it's just my opinion but based upon the way D3 population numbers look these days, I don't seem to be the only one who feels this way.
11/14/2018 11:14 AM
“Dumbing it down” is a laugh. If anything, the population now is lower because the game became too complicated for some people, strategy means more than knowing the right formulas and basic counting.

At this point, the game population can basically be split into two camps - the people who understand the concepts of prioritization and probability, and who recognize the strategic implications of them; and the people who do not understand or recognize those things, and call it “random”.

D3 is complex, fragile and variable.

The whole game top to bottom is random. Just thought I'd make everyone happy by reminding them. Carry on....

No wonder we've had all puppet presidents since JFK. Grown *** men arguing about the dumbest ****.

Funny stuff.... a loss, yes! Unexpected, not at all. My comment was just in general. Nothing related to last nights games or any games. To be honest, I was kinda pushing my debate with shoe... he believes none of this is random. And I believe most things are random.

when you say the words "random" or "poach" here, it triggers discussions. I was just feeding the fire

I think it’s good somethings are random. If nothing was random, and everything was projected, it’d be an easy game to master because there’d be 1 good strategy.

Except, between the random number generator on each play that decides outcomes and early entries, do we really need that much randomness in recruiting?
