Yep, back in the day (before analytics), there were RPs who had terrible whips that would continually get save chances. Living near Chicago, 1989 Mitch Williams immediately comes to mind. Somehow, he saved 36 games and sported a 2.76 ERA despite a 1.51 whip. With 52 walks in 81 innings, he was the original "Wild Thing".
Just checked.... The movie "Major League" came out that same year, so maybe Mitch got the nickname from the movie... not sure which came first. I just remember thinking of Mitch Williams every time Ricky Vaughn took the mound in the movie.
