Montreal Spectres Fan Club 1990- Topic

Game 13: Montreal hits four home runs and Dave Burba pitches a complete game 4-hitter, striking out 10, as the Spectres take the opener at Pittsburgh, 9-2. Jay Buhner and Edgardo Alfonzo each hit their first double of the season.

Game 14: Ken Griffey Jr. and Olmedo Saenz hit solo home runs to back Omar Daal, who goes seven strong innings in a 4-1 win over Pittsburgh. Rick Aguilera pitches the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Game 15: In a very odd game, Montreal outhits Pittsburgh 8-4 but loses 6-4. The Spectres commit three errors, two by Tony Phillips, who is clearly not the answer at shortstop.

Game 16: Ken Griffey Jr. hits his ninth home run and Jacob Cruz drives in four runs in his first start of the season as the Spectres rally for an 11-4 win over the Melons. Montreal scores six in the eighth and two more in the ninth to turn a close game around.

From here the Spectres head to Shea Stadium to face the Cosmos.

Game 17: Eddie Taubensee hits a home run, Scott Erickson throws six good innings, and the Spectre bullpen strikes out five of the last seven batters they face as they top the Cosmos 5-2.

Game 18: Dave Burba gets batted around for nine hits in 3.2 innings while New York's starter, Odalis Perez, throws 6.1 scoreless. The Spectres cannot recover, dropping a 9-3 decision at Shea.

Game 19: Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 10th home run and Omar Daal improves to 3-0 as the Spectres defeat New York 8-3.

Game 20: Lenny Harris commits three errors, helping lead to three unearned New York runs in the eighth, and the Spectres lose 7-6 in extra innings, getting no extra base hits in the series finale.

Interleague play starts with tough series against PL Central powers Kansas City and Detroit.

Game 21: Montreal blasts five home runs, three of them in a five-run sixth inning, but it's all for naught as Rick Aguilera blows an 8-6 lead in the ninth, giving the visiting Blue Devils a 10-8 win.

Game 22: The Spectre bullpen is responsible for another late inning loss; Bob Wickman allows two in the eighth of what had been a 5-5 game. Montreal scores once in the ninth but Geoff Jenkins pops up for the last out with the tying run on second base. KC wins, 7-6.

Game 23: Lenny Harris and Bret Boone each hits their first home run of the season and Julio Gambetta goes 5.2 innings in his second start of the season as the Spectres win at Detroit, 13-3. Harris drives in five runs; Carlos Delgado drives in four (and hits his ninth homer).

Game 24: Detroit destroys the Spectres, 22-4, though 12 of those runs come off of Felix Rodriguez. Geoff Jenkins and Bret Boone hit home runs for the Spectres.

At 12-12, Montreal trails Philadelphia by six games. That deficit could get worse in a hurry, as the Seaphils visit Olympic Stadium next.

Game 25: Philly makes short work of the Spectre pitching staff, accumulating 18 hits and 13 runs in a 10-run victory. Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 12th home run for Montreal.

Game 26: Carlos Delgado hits two home runs and drives home six, breaking a 7-7 tie in the eighth with a two-run single, and the Spectres even their record with a 9-7 win over Philly.

Game 27: Bob Wickman is in the middle of another collapse; Philly scores eight times in the sixth; five of those are charged to Wickman, who retires only one batter. The Seaphils take a 2-1 edge in the series with a 15-10 win.

Game 28: Montreal escapes with a split in the Philly series, capitalizing on eight walks by Seaphil pitchers and a three-run homer by Ramon Hernandez.

Interleague sets with Cleveland and Washington are next.

Game 29: Montreal scores seven in the second inning, capped by Carlos Delgado's three-run homer, and they hold on from there for a 9-4 win over visiting Cleveland.

Game 30: Ken Griffey Jr. homers, doubles, and drives in five, helping Chuck Finley get his first win of the season, 10-3 over Cleveland.

Game 31: Ken Griffey Jr. homers and doubles again, driving in three, and helps Kelvim Escobar to his first win of the season, 8-5 over defending PL champ Washington.

Game 32: Bret Boone hits two solo home runs, continuing an early season power surge, and the Spectres outslug the Senators 9-6. Rick Aguilera gets the save, his seventh of the season.

The Spectres head to San Francisco to take on the hated 69ers.

Game 33: Catcher prospect Steve Gerano hits a pinch hit three run homer in the eighth, snapping a 3-3 tie, and the Spectres take the opener at 3Com Park, 6-3.

Game 34: Red hot Bret Boone singles, doubles, and homers, driving in five runs, and leads the Spectres to a 13-5 win over the Niners. Kelvim Escobar gets battered but lasts through five to earn his second consecutive win.

Game 35: In what easily ranks as the worst loss of the decade for the Spectres, Mike Remlinger and Bob Wickman combine to allow Frisco to rally from a 10-3 deficit in the eighth to win the series finale, 11-10. Wickman does not retire any of the four batters he faces.

Interleague matches with Oakland and Seattle are next on the schedule.

Game 36: Even Robb Nen is getting in on the bullpen follies, as the Amoeba score three off him late in a 7-4 over the Spectres.

Game 37: Another game, another lead blown by the bullpen. It's Mike Remlinger's turn today as Oakland rallies for three runs to erase a 4-3 deficit.

Game 38: Ken Griffey Jr. has a two homer, five RBI game and starting pitcher Omar Daal is 3-3 with a double as the Spectres beat the Emeralds, 13-8. Griffey Jr. now has 19 home runs and 53 RBI. Daal improves to 5-1.

Game 39: Ramon Martinez hits two of Montreal's five home runs and Dave Burba lasts eight innings as the Spectres beat Seattle 12-5.

The Spectres will host Milwaukee next.

Game 40: Bret Boone, batting leadoff today, hits three doubles and Kelvim Escobar throws seven shutout innings as the Spectres beat Milwaukee 7-3. Montreal's customary bullpen meltdown in the ninth costs them a shutout but not a win.

Game 41: Ricky Gutierrez breaks a 2-2 tie in the sixth with an RBI single, then snaps a 3-3 tie in the eighth with a two-run double, and the Spectres hold on to win, 5-3. Rick Aguilera gets his 10th save; Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 20th home run.

Game 42: Steve Gerano homers and drives in four and Scott Erickson improves to 4-1 as the Spectres beat Milwaukee 6-3.

The Spectres will travel to Houston next to face the Lone Stars, with whom they are currently tied in the wild card standings.

Game 43: Omar Daal not only throws seven shutout innings, he drives in the game's only run with a fifth inning single; the Spectre bullpen holds a lead for a change and Montreal takes the opener 1-0.

Game 44: Kelvim Escobar pitches five shutout innings but Tony Phillips commits a key error in the eighth, Houston scores two unearned runs, and the Spectres drop a 6-5 decision to the Lone Stars.

Game 45: Dave Burba pitches a complete game 3-hit shutout and the Spectres exit the series leading the wild card race by one game, beating Houston 5-0 in the series finale. Carlos Delgado hits his 16th home run and drives in runs 47 and 48 for the season.

The Spectres will host Chicago, Central Division leaders, next.

Game 46: A hard-fought contest has a predictable end when it goes to extras; the Chicago bullpen is more effective than Montreal's, and the Bootleggers win the series opener 6-5. Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 22nd homer for Montreal.

Game 47: The Spectres always seem to have trouble overcoming errors by Tony Phillips. Today's miscue paves the way for four unearned runs and Chicago takes their second straight at Olympic Stadium, 10-8 over Montreal.

Game 48: Brady Anderson reaches base five times and Kelvim Escobar has another good performance, going six innings in a 7-1 win over the Bootleggers as the Spectres salvage the series finale.

Interleague sets with the White Sox and Yankees are next on the schedule.

Game 49: Ken Caminiti hits two home runs and Steve Gerano adds a three-run double; Montreal allows six unearned runs but survives with a 10-6 victory.

Game 50: Bret Boone and Jay Buhner hit home runs to back Dave Burba, who gets his seventh win in a 7-5 decision over the White Sox.

Game 51: Tim Hudson pitches seven shutout innings and the Yankee bullpen finishes the job as New York beats Montreal 4-0.

Game 52: Scott Erickson pitches eight brilliant innings before running into some ninth inning trouble; Rick Aguilera manages to put out the fire in a 3-2 Spectre win.

Montreal will host the Looters next.

Game 53: Carlos Delgado homers and drives in four whle Kelvim Escobar looks good once again and the Spectres beat the visiting Looters 7-4 to open the series.

Game 54: Ricky Gutierrez hits his first home run of the season and Omar Daal runs his record to 7-1 as Montreal beats LA 10-2. Bret Boone has three hits and three runs scored.

Game 55: Royce Clayton's bases-loaded double in the ninth helps the Looters snap a 7-7 tie and win the series finale, 11-7. Mike Remlinger takes the loss in relief.

Divisional play returns and the Spectres will start with home series against Pittsburgh and New York.

Game 56: Edgardo Alfonzo returns to the lineup with a bang, clubbing two doubles and a homer, and the Spectres survive another blown save by Bob Wickman, matching Pittsburgh's three-run eighth with one of their own to win the opener 7-6.

Game 57: Ken Griffey Jr. and Bret Boone hit home runs, but it's Brady Anderson's two-run double in the ninth that delivers the winning run as the Spectres survive a blown save by Eddie Guardado to beat Pittsburgh 6-3.

Game 58: The Spectre bullpen stars in another bad production; Robb Nen allows four runs in .2 innings of work and the Melons avoid a sweep at the hands of the Spectres, winning the finale 11-7.

The Cosmos will be in town next.
