HOPING FOR TUESDAY ....
or maybe ...
4/1/2008 5:44 AM
It's April 1. Not March anymore. Put up video or confess.

Uncleal: Coach, did you remember to bring in my video today?
Coach: Yeah, yeah, kid ... I'll bring it in soon ... are those jockstraps clean yet?

Bump. Wouldn't want this to fall off the 1st page.

Interestingly enough, I am ambidextrous and I find playing 2nd base handed to be a hinderance. If I have to come in on a high hopper just passed the mound, how am I supposed to get the proper turn of my body in order to throw a ball to 1st base for the out with a speedy runner hustling down the line? The only places I play handed are outfield and 1st base. I could not imagine very many handed infielders. Though, there have been a few in Mike Squires (played more than 10 games at 3rd base) and Don Mattingly (played 2nd and 3rd base) for instance, plus many people said Mark Grace could have been a 3rd baseman because he had a very strong arm and good range.

thank you jamsing. Tell that to uncleal please.

For which part?

how you can't possibly have an advantage as a y playing 2B.

1. I field the ball cleanly.

2. My forward momentum continues moving straight ahead.

3. My arm reaches into my glove and pulls the ball out.

4. My arm goes back my hand and the ball are about even length-wise, but higher than, my shoulder.

4 and a half. My head and torso pivot about 80 or so degrees toward 1st as I am making move 4. However, my legs continue to move straight ahead. This does not use any time as it uses the same time as 4 does.

5. I fire the ball to 1st. The ball will drop as the angle is not a straight 90 (too much loss of speed there), but it will still reach 1B before it hits the ground.

6. 1B goes low and snags the ball. Bada bing.

MikeClaw.....or 9 times out of 10 the ball will clear the 1st baseman to his by about 5-10 feet, because your direction and speed of travel would dictate that the ball would be off target simply because of which way you are going and the trajectory of your throw. Even if it were on target, you would not generate nearly enough velocity to throw a guy out who runs a 4.8 in the 40 yard dash....Just face it, if it made any sense what-so-ever to do, it would have been done numerous times already....Why is it that they even say "had that y pitchers momentum not taken him in the wrong direction, he could have thrown that baserunner out." I hear that all the time, that when a pitcher is coming in to field a bunt, "had he just turned the other way to spin around and get his feet right........" or "there was just no way for him to get his feet planted or to spin around with his momentum carrying him in the wrong direction to make an accurate throw"..........What would be smart is if the y pitcher could scoop the ball cleanly to the catchers throwing hand and have him fire a strike to 1st base, but even that takes too much time. I would actually love for someone to go out, video tape this and test these theories and then post them somewhere for us all to see. Because, it is about as plausible as Steve Dalkowski actually throwing 110 MPH as a pitcher. It is possible, but HIGHLY improbable....

jamsing, chill out - he just copied and pasted uncleal's dumbass response to how he does it.

I think the real hard throw to make would be a slow roller that just gets by the pitcher. If the 2nd baseman is somewhat parallel with the 1st baseman he has a fair shot. However, the more he moves toward home plate the worse chance he has of making a play. After picking the ball up his next step would have to be toward the first base line to get his upper body turned enough to make the throw. Damn near impossible.

jamsing - apparently you haven't read the full thread. i know it looks daunting at 34 pages, but i urge you to read it. i promise you it will be worth every minute you spend.
and, needless to say, if you actually attempted steps 4 and 4 1/2 while moving at regular speed, an errant throw would be the least of your worries. the injuries you would sustain to your back, shoulder and knees would be a lot worse than giving the batter an extra base on the overthrow.

Ok, it was a rebuttal to what I was saying though Billyho....He did not say anything at all which in my eyes is a defense of his copy and paste. Anyway, I am quite chilled, just got back from getting my wife some hash browns because she is "craving"....I just keep thinking about the whole pivot that a y would have to attempt in order to make a throw....that guy better throw as hard as Shawon Dunston did or he will never throw a catcher out.
Mikeclaw, tell you what, tonight after work, I will attempt to read it. Apparently this guy Uncle Al is making quite the arguement but is tending not to see the obvious matters of "if it were even half way idealic, then coaches and managers around the country would do it."
