the projections, while not 100% accurate, are absolutely necessary for understanding what a newbie has in the farm system from the outset, especially since other owners will be trying to pry those prospects from him...

So, if you look at your draft history, you don't think the 25th player drafted would be better than the 58th player drafted?

And, as far as I know, no one is forced to trade any prospects. In fact, if I were a n00b getting unsolicitated offers for a certain player, I'd change his value to me right them. Vets are telling me "I want him". I'd take that to mean "He's good".
I agree with all of this. Still, if the newb finds himself with a .600 winning% at the All Star break, in a tough division battle, and it's clear that the back of his rotation is dragging him down, he's gotta at least consider moving a prospect for a good SP 3/4 (with some caring advice from a vet/mentor, of course). Cutting out Adv eliminates that possibility. Would you really suggest that a newbie not make a deal under these circumstances? I wouldn't. I think he has to consider it

How does it eliminate that possibility? Float the idea of trading a prospect to SEVERAL owners and see what you're getting offered. If you're winning at a .600 clip, you have a good idea of what makes a good BL player. If you're not getting offered one, don't accept and float the idea to a few more owners.

Or you inherited a really good team and just it mostly the way it was. But that isn't really the point. The point is- how do you really know what your prospect is worth? Sure, you might get offered a Big League player, even a good #3 SP. That still doesn't mean you're not getting bent over on the trade, because you really don't have any idea what you have in that prospect.

Anyway, to each his own, I'm done with this back and forth. But to the OP, I would just warn you that you'll likely be lost without Adv at first, and although Mike really, really knows his stuff, his people skills (and patience for the more annoying parts of human nature) are a bit lacking. If you have the slightest desire to make any trades in your first couple of seasons, I would highly advise you to boost Advanced Scouting.

A prospect is only worth what you get offered. That's pretty much the same with everything in life. If you post the ol' reliable "Looking for a 3rd starter, anyone in my minors is available", you'll find out two things very quickly. 1. Who in your minors is valuable. 2. What you can get for them. If it doesn't seem "right", you don't accept. And, if you're playing .600 at the All-Star break, you know what ratings are working for you. Look for something better than your 4th best pitcher but worse than your 2nd best.

Anyway, I'd highly advise against trading prospects in your first season.
