I have a formula that I use to predict performance (OPS) of players. It's pretty accurate (R^2 of 0.79 for other stat geeks).
Using that formula, Eye and Contact are about even when Power and Splits are around 50.
When Power and Splits are higher, Contact is more valuable....when they're lower, Eye is more valuable.
I think this was addressed a bit earlier in another manner(and overlooked). If a guy can hit, you want him swinging. If he can't, you'd like him walking.
Sometimes a guy can hit
because he has plate discipline and pitch recognition. You can't just say, "he has a .350 AVG, so I want him hacking." He may have a .350 average
because he has a good eye and waits for the right pitch. Put him up there hacking, and he loses that. Again, if we're talking HBD, I'll defer to those who say contact is more important at high levels, but if we're talking basic baseball principles, approach leads to an ability to hit.
