It's time for my Moses Malone story.....

In 1981 I was working at the TV station in Houston that aired Rockets games. Right before the season started we had the coach and a bunch of players at the station to tape a special. All of a sudden I realized someone was standing over me. I was 5' 9" and I looked straight up. Moses was right behind me, leaning over and looking at the studio camera. He asked me, "how much do these things cost? I need to get one for my front yard."

The only NBA player I've ever met was Jerry Stackhouse. He bounced a $21 check the summer after his first season with Washington. True story. My boss called me on my day off to ask if I wanted to but the check from him (for $21). 1 of my biggest regrets is not buying it.

I did get his autograph but I accidentally threw it away when I was moving

that's a good one. what was going on in Moses' front yard I wonder, that made him want a camera. Perhaps vacuum cleaner salesmen back in 1981?

I've met a few NBA players, your Moses story remined me of when I was standing in line for drinks at an event following Jordan's Hall of Fame induction. Mark Eaton was in line behind me. Talk about looking up at someone!

I've met Michael Jordan and got to shake his hand. Biggest hand I have ever shaken. Also, my best friend's ex-stepdad was an attorney that represented Jumping Joe Caldwell in a lawsuit against the Carolina Cougars and we got to meet him and he gave us some basketball tips. He told us that why most teams struggle on the road is because when you are dribbling while keeping your head up, you are subconsciously used to hearing the bounce and feeling the vibration of the ball hitting the floor and that's how you keep in control of your dribble, so if the crowd is real loud it impacts that ability which leads to more turnovers or less assists if you keep your head down to watch your dribble.

Years later I was talking to Vernon Maxwell (at the TV station) about what it was like to guard Michael Jordan. His answer was “if you guard him too close you just make him mad.”

In the past when we did this league the soft rule was that the four division winners would each do evals for one division after the next draft. Since we are pretty much starting over it would be great if we had four (or more) volunteers to each write an eval (or do a podcast). Or maybe ESPN would so a whole documentary on this draft. Anyhow, if anyone wants to (just for fun!) write an eval or six…….have at it!

I've met Barkley, Moses, Sean Elliot, Kareem and World B Free. B Free had the amazing ability to sign a perfect autograph upside down. I met Kareem in Atlantic City when he played Dr J one on one at the end of their careers. Moses is the biggest human I've ever been close to. Also got to see Michael Porter work out prior to the draft with Jevon Carter. I've never seen anyone shoot like that.
