Game 46: Britt Burns takes a rare shelling and the Riders manage only seven singles as they drop an 8-3 decision to the Goats.

Game 47: The Riders right the ship with a 16-0 blowout of the Goats; Lary Sorensen pitches a complete game shutout while Bill Madlock has five hits. Jeffrey Leonard triples and homers, both his first of the season.

Game 48: Milwaukee does the unthinkable, dropping a series to the Goats, losing the finale by shutout, 9-0. Richard Dotson and Fergie Jenkins combine for a 7-hitter.

The Riders fall to three back of San Diego and head to Minnesota to face the second place Mooseheads (one game out).

Game 49: Mike Witt pitches eight 3-hit innings and Jeffrey Leonard has three hits, including his second home run, as the Riders take the opener in Minneapolis 8-1.

Game 50: Jerry Mumphrey's fourth homer is the only run the Riders can muster and the Mooseheads even the series with a 7-1 victory.

Game 51: Britt Burns pitches into the ninth, allowing only a solo home run, and Rich Gossage gets the last two outs to preserve a tense 2-1 win over Minnesota, striking out Dan Ford and Bob Horner with runners at the corners.

The Riders come out of the series one back of Minnesota and still three behind San Diego. They head to Washington to take on the East-leading Commandos.

Game 52: For a while, it looks like Willie Aikens' fourth inning home run might be all the Riders need, but Lary Sorensen's bid for a second straight shutout is derailed in the bottom of the ninth when Frank Taveras boots a ground ball after a leadoff triple by Willie Wilson. Ron Reed enters but can't stop the Commandos from getting the winning run home and Milwaukee drops a 2-1 game.

Game 53: The Riders continue to struggle at the plate, getting only a solo homer from Bill Madlock. Tommy John keeps it close until the eighth, and the Commandos put five runs on the board for a 6-1 victory.

Game 54: Washington sweeps the Riders behind Joe Niekro, who throws seven innings allowing only one run, and Tony Armas, who doubles twice to drive home four runs in a 9-2 victory.

The Riders will finish this road trip at Atlanta.

Game 55: Sammy Stewart and Dennis Martinez both throw gems and the game goes to extras tied at one; Milwaukee gets a two-run double from Juan Bonilla in the 11th and goes on to win, 4-1. Rich Gossage pitches the bottom half for his 10th save.

Game 56: Milwaukee gets home runs from Tim Raines and Jeffrey Leonard and a scoreless ninth inning from Rich Gossage as they beat Georgia Force 5-4.

Game 57: Lary Sorensen's string of good starts ends with an 11-hit, 6-run outing and the Riders manage only three hits off Phil Niekro as the Force salvages the series finale with a 12-0 blowout.

The Riders head home to face the Mammoths; Milwaukee now trails San Diego by five games.

Game 58: Bruce Benedict hits a three-run homer in the fifth to extend a 4-2 lead and the Riders go on to a 10-6 win over the Mammoths. Tommy John gets the win and improves to 6-5 this season.

Game 59: The Riders strike out only once, but also fail to draw a walk, and are edged by the Mammoths 5-4.

Game 60: The Mammoths hit three home runs, two by Mike Easler, and walk over the Riders 7-1 as the Milwaukee offense takes a day off.

The Riders will visit the Saltdogs in Cleveland next.

Game 61: The anemic Rider offense manages only six singles and they are beaten 8-2 by the Saltdogs.

Game 62: The Riders get 10 hits, but only three runs, a total matched by Cleveland on one swing of Reggie Jackson's bat in the first inning. Cleveland wins, 8-3.

Game 63: Another 10-hit game for the Riders produces only one run as the Saltdogs double up in the hit column and score eight runs for the second straight game.

Suddenly the Riders are back below .500, having lost five in a row, and get ready to host division leader San Diego.

Game 64: Chicken reliever Greg Minton walks home a run in the seventh, and new pitcher Steve Howe is greeted with a bases-loaded double by Sixto Lezcano as the Riders rally for a 4-3 win over San Diego.

Game 65: Milwaukee's offense finally comes to life, but San Diego scores six times in the second and eight more in the fourth to run away with a 15-8 decision. Sammy Stewart takes the brunt of the beating for the Riders.

Game 66: As you might expect, the Riders are shut out the day after scoring eight runs, wasting a good performance by Britt Burns, who drops to 7-4 after the 2-0 defeat.

The Riders will head to Chicago to face the Goats.

Game 67: The Goats don't do much in the second through sixth innings, but they put 14 runs on the board in the three innings that they did score, blowing the Riders out 14-5. Bob Knepper improves to 3-7 for Chicago while Lary Sorensen is now 3-9 for Milwaukee.

Game 68: The Riders send the game to extra innings with two runs in the ninth, but lose in ten on Gorman Thomas' solo home run.

Game 69: Milwaukee salvages the series finale, getting three scoreless innings from the bullpen and hitting three triples to beat the Goats 5-2.

The Riders travel to Minneapolis to face the Mooseheads next.

Game 70: Milwaukee takes a 2-0 lead in the fourth, but Sammy Stewart melts down in the sixth, allowing a leadoff double and then walking three of the next four batters. In all, the first six Mooseheads reach base that inning, and the Riders never score again. Minnesota wins 3-2.

Game 71: Bill Madlock has five hits and four RBI, Tim Raines steals four bases, and Britt Burns pitches a complete game as the Riders crush Minnesota 14-2.

Game 72: Milwaukee takes the series with a 7-3 win in the finale, getting six decent innings from Lary Sorensen, who improves to 4-9.

Milwaukee returns home to host Washington.

Game 73: Tony Armas seems to be a real thorn in our side this season; he homers and drives in four to spearhead a Commando attack that results in a 14-7 decision in Washington's favor.

Game 74: Damaso Garcia hits a two-run single to snap an eighth inning tie, and Rich Gossage closes out the game as Milwaukee takes a 5-3 decision.

Game 75: Tony Armas drives in three more runs and Steve Rogers stifles the Riders as the Commandos take the series with an 8-1 win.

Georgia Force visits Milwaukee next.

Game 76: The Riders actually put some runs on the board off Phil Niekro today, but they still can't beat the Force, losing 7-6. Chris Chambliss is the offensive star of the day, driving in three runs, including the game-winner in the ninth.

Game 77: Steve Trout and Gary Lucas combine for a three-hitter and the Force shut out the Riders 3-0, negating a solid performance by Lary Sorensen, who drops to 4-10.

Game 78: Milwaukee salvages the series finale, beating Phil Niekro, who's back on one day rest, 4-1. Tommy John goes eight innings for the win and Rich Gossage gets his 14th save.

Milwaukee will close out the first half at Yankee Stadium against the Mammoths.

Game 79: A furious ninth-inning rally falls short and the Riders fall in the opener, 5-4. Hal McRae hits a three-run homer to pull the team within a run, but Damaso Garcia strikes out with two runners on base to end the game.

Game 80: Jerry Mumphrey and Hal McRae have three hits each as the Riders even the series with a 6-2 win over New York; Sammy Stewart improves to 4-11 on the season.

Game 81: It is perhaps fitting that Milwaukee closes the first half with a shutout loss to Danny Darwin, 2-10 entering the game. Britt Burns pitches well but takes a 3-0 loss.

Milwaukee is 38-43, 12 games out of first. They actually rank in the top half of the league in runs scored with 407, largely because they are in the DH league. The pitching has not been up to par, ranking 14th in a 16 team league with a 4.96 ERA.

Britt Burns and Tim Raines represent the Riders on the AL All Star Team.

The Riders start the second half at home against Cleveland.

Game 82: Trailing 5-4, the Riders benefit from consecutive errors by Rafael Ramirez in the eighth inning and score seven times, the last three comin on Willie Aikens' 12th home run. The demoralized Saltdogs go down in order in the ninth and the Riders win 11-5.

Game 83: The Riders get 12 hits, Tim Raines steals four bases, and Milwaukee wins 6-4 behind Tommy John.

Game 84: The Riders send the game to extras with a late two-run rally, but Kevin Hickey is responsible for four Saltdog runs in the 10th, including a bases-loaded triple by Gary Matthews, and Milwaukee drops the finale 10-7.

The first interleague games of the year are next, with Houston and Oakland first on the schedule.

Game 85: Juan Bonilla and Frank Taveras drive in two runs each as the Riders get to 10-game winner Dennis Lamp and beat the Hooligans 7-4.

Game 86: Mario Soto throws eight scoreless innings and Larry Andersen gets his 31st save as the Hooligans shut out the Riders 2-0.

Game 87: Oakland's Steve Kemp hits a three-run double to start a five-run seventh, then adds another RBI double in the eighth as the Zoo beats Milwaukee 7-4.

Game 88: Tommy John gets bounced from the game in the second inning, responsible for six runs, and the Riders set some kind of record by collecting 18 hits and scoring only four times, losing 11-4.

We're taking this interleague thing on the road next, traveling to Kansas City and Chicago.
