Game 136: Ken Griffey Jr., Geoff Jenkins, and Ruben Sierra all hit home runs as the Spectres enjoy a Wrigley Field laugher, 12-4 over the Bootleggers. Griffey Jr.'s homer is his 20th of the season.

Game 137: Carlos Delgado has four hits, including a tie-breaking homer in the seventh, and the Spectres sneak past Chicago, 3-2.

Game 138: The bats are back in the finale; Russ Davis and Ruben Sierra hit two homers each to key a 16-3 win over the Bootleggers. Omar Daal goes seven and evens his record at 10-10.

The Spectres head home to face LA.

Game 139: LA gets triples from Mike Lieberthal and starting pitcher Aaron Sele in a four-run second that knocks Dave Burba out of the box; they go on to an easy 6-2 win as the Spectres use six relievers.

Game 140: LA's Tony Graffanino drives in five runs, and an exhausted Spectre bullpen is not up to the challenge of an extra inning contest. LA scores four in the ninth to tie it and wins in the 13th, 9-8.

Game 141: Bret Boone finishes off a fine series with two homers and six RBI as the Spectres avoid a sweep, beating the Looters 13-6. Boone now has 121 RBI.

The team heads to San Diego.

Game 142: Bullpen fatigue continues to hurt the Spectres as the opener in San Diego goes extra innings. Dave Burba is called on to pitch the 12th and he doesn't do a very good job. Todd Hollandsworth hits a 3-run homer with one out to win it for the Conquistadors, 9-6.

Game 143: Montreal suffers a second straight 9-6 loss but manages to do it in regulation this time, if nothing else. Brett Boone continues his RBI binge with two more, giving him 15 in his last four games.

Game 144: Omar Daal pitches seven strong innings and the Spectres avoid a sweep, beating San Diego 3-2 to close out the series.

Montreal heads home to face Milwaukee.

Game 145: Ruben Sierra hits two home runs for Montreal but none of his teammates does much to support him and the Spectres drop the opener 5-4.

Game 146: The Spectre bats get rolling with 19 hits and Montreal edges the Krauts, 9-8. Ricky Gutierrez has four RBI.

Game 147: Mark Mulder puts an end to all that scoring nonsense and shuts out the Spectres 8-0, giving Milwaukee the series.

The Spectres now travel to Cincinnati to face the Stingers before closing the season with divisional competition.

Game 148: Montreal scores six times in the eighth to take a 10-5 lead but the exhausted Spectre bullpen can't hold on. Cincy scores in the eighth to make it 10-6 and then rallies for five in the bottom of the ninth to win it. Felix Rodriguez and Mike Remlinger face seven batters in the ninth without retiring any of them.

Game 149: Montreal hits six home runs and breaks things open with an eight-run ninth inning to even the series with a 16-5 blowout over the Stingers. Bret Boone drives in four and passes the 130-RBI mark for the season.

Game 150: The Spectres get off to a good start but Omar Daal can't hold onto the lead and the Stingers win the series with a 10-7 victory.

The last round of divisional play begins with a trip to Pittsburgh. Trailing New York by five games, the season is effectively over.

Game 151: Dave Burba doesn't even make it out of the first inning, allowing five runs, and the Melons are on their merry way to an 8-6 win over Montreal.

Game 152: Montreal slugs out 20 hits, four by Carlos Delgado (who also collects two walks), and beats the Melons 14-5. Jim Brower gets the win in relief, improving to 6-15.

Game 153: Bret Boone doubles, homers, and drives in five, giving him 141 RBI for the year and keying a 14-6 win over Pittsburgh. Carlos Delgado adds a home run and two RBI, reaching 100 for the season.

Game 154: Omar Daal comes within one out of a complete game and the Spectres make a three-run first inning stand up, beating Pittsburgh 3-2.

Montreal hosts presumptive division champion New York next.

Game 155: Dave Burba has another short outing, leaving in the third, and loses his 18th game of the season, as the Cosmos essentially clinch the division with a 12-3 win.

Game 156: Montreal staves off elimination for another day despite a disastrous outing by Joe Kennedy, who allows five runs in the second inning. Ken Caminiti has four hits and five RBI to key a 10-6 victory by the Spectres.

Game 157: New York breaks the game open with nine runs over the final three innings, ending the division race with an 11-2 blowout victory over Montreal. Bret Boone hits his 30th home run for the Spectres.

Game 158: Bret Boone homers and the Spectre bullpen tosses 2.2 innings of shutout relief as Montreal earns a split with the Cosmos, winning 4-2.

The season ends at Philadelphia, who has already lost 100 games.

Game 159: Dave Burba manages to last seven innings in this one but the Spectres manage only six hits and two runs off Phily, losing 6-2. Bret Boone drives in both Montreal runs, giving him 149 for the season.

Game 160: Geoff Jenkins homers and drives in four while Kelvim Escobar pitches four scoreless innings in relief to pick up a win as the Spectres even the series with Philly, 8-3. Bret Boone drives in his 150th run of the season.

Game 161: Montreal gets 10 hits but is pulverized, 13-2, by the Seaphils.

Game 162: Montreal finishes the season with a win, beating Phily 8-3 and getting home runs from Ricky Gutierrez, Geoff Jenkins, and Ken Caminiti.

The Spectres finish the season 74-88, five games out of the division lead.

In the 2002 draft, Montreal has the #7 pick.

It is, unfortunately, an extraordinarily weak draft. Pitchers go in the first six selections, leaving the Spectres to take a speedy OF named Carl Crawford.



In round 2, the Spectres do take a pitcher, Aaron Cook. They will bring him along slowly, similar to the plan with Jake Westbrook, hoping he will develop into a starter someday.

The Spectres get another 2nd round pick later today as they own Cleveland's 2nd-round selection from the Robb Nen trade.



With that second 2nd round pick, the Spectres bolster the bullpen with Salomon Torres, returning to the majors after a brief retirement.

In the third round, Montreal attempts to boost a suddenly feeble outfield, taking Michael Cuddyer.

2002 PREVIEW

The Spectres look to improve on a disappointing 2001, largely because the starting rotation should be more effective. Forced by injuries and extreme circumstances to use a six-man rotation in 2001, the Spectres should be able to stick with a five-man group this season. The bullpen is somewhat shaky and it's unclear who the closer will be in Robb Nen's absence.

Offensively the team hopes that Bret Boone can build on his amazing 2001 season. The club looks to Mark Bellhorn to contribute heavily as he is the most likely candidate to play shortstop this season.

The division was weak last season... if it remains so, the Spectres have a shot at returning to the playoffs. If not, a second division finish is likely.

The season begins!

Montreal travels to the West Coast to face San Diego.

Game 1: Joe Kennedy gets the Opening Day start for Montreal and hits a two-run single in the fourth to drive in the first runs of the season. An error by Mark Bellhorn leads to a three-run rally by the Conquistadors in the ninth, but the Spectres hold on for a 7-6 win.

Game 2: Carlos Delgado and Geoff Jenkins hit consecutive home runs in the first inning, and a few batters later Wendell Magee makes his Spectre debut with a three-run shot. Tomo Ohka goes seven scoreless innings and the Spectres win 6-1.

Game 3: Chuck Finley's first start of the season is a disaster as San Diego scores eight times in the second inning. The Spectres get good relief work in a lost cause, falling 10-3 in the series finale.

Montreal will start the home schedule against 3-0 Cincinnati.

Game 4: The top of the Stinger lineup is 5-9 with a walk and the Spectres are stymied by Pedro Astacio as Cincy spoils Montreal's home opener with a 4-2 victory.

Game 5: Dave Burba leaves in the middle of a six-run third inning for the Stingers and Cincy rolls to 5-0 with a 9-4 win over the Spectres.

Game 6: Ben Sheets shuts down the Spectres as Cincy completes the sweep with a 4-1 victory.

The Spectres head back to the West Coast to face LA.

Game 7: The Spectres get 10 hits, all singles, and strand a bunch of runners while striking out 11 times as Cory Lidle and three Looter relievers shut out Montreal 4-0.

Game 8: Bret Boone has three hits and three RBI to help the Spectres overcome a 4-0 first inning deficit as they even the series with an 8-6 win.

Game 9: The Looter bullpen throws 4.1 scoreless innings and LA gets a late run off Kelvim Escobar to beat the Spectres 4-3 and take the series.
