Which of these two would be your closer? Doc Lawson or Pat Abe  I'm leaning towards Lawson beacuse of his better vL and vR.

I don't really use closers but Lawson is the better short RP.   And, because of his 10 stamina, he's the type I would use as closer if I decided to use one again.  10-15 PC, available in the 9th only.

Mike, what do you think the chances are that WIS will adjust the new-owner budget-setting options? How big of an issue is it, in your mind? I've twice recently thought about joining new worlds, and in the end talked myself out of it largely because the 14-18-20 training/medical progression now seems so agonizingly slow. If you could reset the budgeting program, what would you do?

Btw, thanks for the head's up earlier, re releasing injured arb guys.

Very slim.
I also find it to be a big issue but, we have to keep in mind, we're experienced owners presumbably not playing in alias-infested worlds.   I understand the logic behind it from WifS' viewpoint.   N00b joins and goes full bore in either direction(0 or 20), starts to understand the game a bit, realizes it will take him 5 full seasons rectify his budgeting error and abandons his team to move on.    Or alias joins, over and over again, while bouncing back and forth from 20 to 0 to 20.   So I understand why WifS prefers a "slow progression".    I tend to trade 2nd/3rd year players and older veterans to offset the process(slowed progression/accelerated regression, respectively).   I also tend to draft an "signing risk" in my first season in hopes of getting the comp pick at 18m instead of 14m.   I don't think that's the "best" way to play but I find it necessary.
My "solutions" are too complicated.   You could allow 20/0 starts but I think that's too extreme and would encourage aliases.    You could allow league average starts but, just because you and I(and the majority of the owners in our worlds) prefer 20 and 0 in some categories, it's not necessarily what a new owner likes.  I know the "zero medical" disciples aren't interested in starting at 17(or 13).  So you could say "10 or league average" but that's a programming nightmare(I imagine).   In the end, I think the "best" option is 5m increments.   That way you can be at 0/20 at the start of your 2nd season.

Hi quick question, if my players ask for a lot to re-sign, is it safe to let it go to arb if I really want him again. should i look to patience before considering ******* him off in arb? Also is it okay to let a player go to arb then give him what he wants (since its usually cheaper than his re-sign demands).

Stupid question alert.  What's the difference between hitters with say 80/80/50/50 hitting ratings as opposed to a 50/50/80/80.

You have three arbs.   They will always re-sign if you arb them only twice, however their LT demands go up each season.   If you arb them three times, they may not re-sign.   One thing to keep in mind is that position players begin to decline at 32-33.    So, if you're arbing a 26-27 y/o position player, it might be worth signing him LT during the 1st/2nd arb.   Pitchers are effective for much longer.

The 80/80 split guy will be much more consistent.   Occassionally, the 80/80 con/pow guy will produce some really good numbers.   I'm almost always disappointed with my 80/80 c/p guys.

Hi MIke,

One last question for today, theoretically I can play 3 short stops in the outfield if I wanted correct. There's no position restrictions?

Building on that question, I saw the recommended stats for each position, i.e. RF needs a decent arm, and Left doesn't need much of anything. Would playing a super defensive guy like a short stop in left actually help make better plays more often? +'s or ++'s? Or is it overkill. I.e. is a 75 arm LF just as good you think as a 85 armed LF.

You can play anyone anywhere with no additional penalty.  There is not positional learning curve.

You'll get more + plays in RF with a strong arm and more + plays in LF with good range.   All in all, I'm beginning to think you can play a rock in RF if it has a good arm.   LF gets more balls hit that way.

What's the lowest total amount you've ever budgeted for the draft?  Would you ever go 0/0/20 for hs/coll/Int
4/23/2012 7:41 PM
0/6.   Probably not.  The only reason I got to 0/6 was because my payroll was so high.   I also budgeted 0 to IFA.

Should i have left Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Miguel Gallardo in the minors longer than I did?  Is that an explanation for why he is doing mmore poorly both last year and this year than what I expected?  Did I just expect too much?
4/24/2012 3:22 PM
Players develop just fine in the BL if they're playing.    His contact/eye will have his OPS lower than you'd initially expect at a glance but I see him as a 35+ homer guy over the course of a full season.  In a neutral park, I'd expect an OPS between .800-.850 in a reasonably competitive world.    This is the closest guy I have:  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Philip Brandt    It's not that he hasn't been awesome, I just expected more .900 OPS seasons.

So when you went 0/6 in scouting, did you get anything worth while?  How much success is possible if you just looked at current ratings and makeup if you had little to no draft scouting?
