Sweet 16 of the National Tournament
#2 seeded Guilford advances to West regional title game
Guilford knocked off a tough Calvin team 81-77 last night. The teams battled back and forth for the 1st half until Calvin's Matthew Mattos hit a three with 16:31 in the game to give Calvin its last lead at 40-39. Guilford's John Bronson, who lead the Quakers with 19 points, answered with a bank shot to retake the lead 40 seconds later - a lead Guilford would not give up. The Quakers opened the lead to 9 on Bronson's 4 point play and then hung on for dear life at the end. Scott Salisbury, 14 points and 11 rebounds, missed two free throws with 35 seconds to go to open the door for Calvin, but Gary Gallion only managed one of two free throws and Salisbury made up for his mistake by nailing the next two free throws to seal the victory. Sheng Huang came off the bench to score 17 for the Quakers who hit 11-14 three's for the game. Guilford will face #11 (#8 seed) Univ. of New England in the West regional title game.
Bridgewater moves to Final Four of PI
Cornell Apple scored 22 to lead five players in double figures to help Bridgewater defeat Texas, Dallas 76-66 to advance to the final four of the postseason invitational. Free throw shooting was the key as the Eagles converted 31 of 43 attempts to Texas, Dallas' 12-20. Four Texas, Dallas starters fouled out in the game. Bridgewater found themselves down 25-22 with 5:33 to go in the first half but rattled off a 17-0 run, keyed by Steve Kincheloe and Richard Burton's 6 points apiece, to take a comfortable halftime lead and hold on for the victory. Bridgewater will face Defiance out of the Heartland Conference tonight.

Guilford drops a close one to New England
Guilford's run came to a close last night as a late cold spell doomed the Quakers falling 66-61 to Univ. of New England. Peter Guerriero scored 16 and Jason Picklesimer added 15 points and 2 key blocks in the win. Guilford was lead by John Bronson's 16 points and Peter Tibbits 10 assists, but only got 5 points from Scott Salisbury who was in foul trouble the entire second half.
The Quakers appeared to be in control midway through the second half answering everything UNE had to offer until Picklesimer hit a three to cut the lead to one at 7:57 to go in the game. Minutes later Guerriero hit one of two free throws to tie it. The lead changed hands a couple of times, and Salisbury scored to tie it again at 55 with 3:08 to go, but that was the last of the good news for Guilford. After Tibbits hit one of two free throws to close the gap to one, Guerriero nailed another three and UNE made free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win and advance to the Final Four.
Final Four of the PI
Defiance edges Bridgewater to advance to final of PI
Defiance struggled most of the game, but came alive when it mattered most to pull victory from the jaws of defeat against Bridgewater. William Brown led Defiance with 19 points and the bench outscored the Eagles 28-11 to key the victory. Also key was the difference in foul shooting as Defiance hit 24-29 besting Bridgewater's 23-31. William Moon led 5 Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Larry Nave added 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Bridgewater got off to a strong start leading 17-6 early after Ernest Zelechowski hit a three, then opened the gap to 32-14 on Nave's tip in en route to an 11 point halftime lead. The second half seemed to provide more of the same as the lead got back up to 15 with 15:04 to go, but was cut to 10 points with 9:15 . Defiance then whittled to deficit to two with 5:18 to go on Brown's three. Bridgewater seemed to regain command, but Defiance tied it at 83 with 1:54 to go and took their first lead of the game with 35 seconds remaining as Chad Boyd scored on a putback. Moon answered for the Eagles with 16 seconds , but Boyd responded again to take a one point lead with 5 seconds . Bridgewater called timeout to set up one last ditch effort, but Cornell Apple missed short at the buzzer. The loss ended Coach billhulley's great run in his first season at the helm of the Eagles.
