nuke, are you willing to wager on that?

I guess I should have asked him to put his money on his beliefs about 60 pages ago.

So your argument is that teams that strikeout less do score more runs?

Here's an exercise for you this year.
Look at the boxscores every day. Keep up on the runs scored by teams that strikeout 14+ times in a game(more than half their outs).
Let me know how many RPG they average. I'm willing to wager that it's less than the league average.
That wouldn't show anything. There will be lots of games where teams strikeout very few times and still don't score many runs.

And to answer your question...no, it's stupid and pointless.

so answer my question:

It would show plenty. It would show that striking out half the time in a game doesn't produce runs.
Conversely, striking out a few times per game will produce varied results.
Would you like to wager?
14+ strikeout games RPG vs. league average

Thought so.

That would be interesting to see... a chart with # of strikeouts vs. runs scored for the last 20 years and another chart for the 1920-1950 time frame.
ROB TRACY!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?!

Fine, I'll bet, but you do the work. But not just 14+ K's per game. For everygame, chart # of K's and # of runs. I'm comfortable betting that you won't find any trend correlating high k's to low runs.
2/20/2008 7:05 PM
My guess is that there WILL be a relationship for K's vs. Runs when the # of strikeouts gets higher than, say, two standard deviations above the norm (which would be about 1/6 of the games).
If a pitcher is "on" enough to strikeout eight or more hitters (or a team is "off" enough to whiff eight or more times), it will have a negative impact on the runs.
