the Apples in Stereo guy lives a few blocks from me -- he's a real cool laidback hipster type guy with a couple/few kids (or at least one) -- used to come in my store a lot (when i owned a vintage record clothing store) real unpretentious -- i never realized how big they are in places like Japan, he never brags or anything -- he's got several side projects including kid's music -- then one night i saw him jamming on Stephen Colbert which is cool as **** to me

I own several of his albums.

Ask him if he's seen Jeff Mangum.

I went on a road trip this weekend. The featured artists were Born Ruffians and Mates of State. Born Ruffians were kind of like edgy folk for teenagers who hate the parents, wear rectangle glasses and have side parts but aren't cool enough to listen to The Black Keys. Think Violent Femmes meet Modest Mouse meet Moldy Peaches. Pretty solid overall. Mates of State sounded kind of like if Aqueduct sang duo with one of the chicks from All Girl Summer Fun Band and they passed the mic back and forth Beastie Boys style. It was okay but a little too happy/poppy at times. I had listened to the bands a couple of times before but felt like giving them a thorough run through at my buddies urging.

I might give Born Ruffians another shot, but it wasn't doing it for me when I gave it a quick listen. Mates of State sound too much like The New Pornographers, who I've never really understood all the fuss over.

Going to this on Sunday. There's going to be a lot of crap, but hopefully some good stuff too.

Probably a little better than I expected...heavy on the Elf Power and Gerbils which were awesome at times. The E6 film they played was absolutely horrible--about what you'd think it would be like, all dadaist and surreal. So bad and artsy that Antonsirius would have loved it. I actually talked to Julian Koester (NMH/Music Tapes) before the show, but didn't realize who he was until he got up on stage and started playing the singing saw.

"Here Comes My Baby" - Cat Stevens.

"Rag and Bones" - White Stripes
"Anxious Arms" - The Jealous Sound
"The Rat" - The Walkmen

My three most recently acquired albums:

Minmae - 20 Nights of Wine and Song
Mute Math - Mute Math
Tomihira - Play Dead

Luke warm on the first, somewhat feeling the third and really into a couple songs on the second.

You seem to be really digging The Walkmen. I never really got into them but maybe I should give them another shot.

I like them, but have never really understood why some people just absolutely love them. Just bought the wife Franz Ferdinand tickets for her birthday...should be fun.

Springsteen--The Seeger Sessions...I don't know how I missed this one when it came out.
