Playing in the top leagues formed after owners had cut their teeth in other leagues is a different experience than playing in leagues where inexperienced owners compete against guys who know what they're doing.
You can't fleece people in trades (for the most part), you aren't going to find multiple ML starters on the waiver wire, people don't accidentally release good players, the Rule 5 prospects are barely worth scouting, and there typically aren't any cheap wins to be had.
I'm not familiar enough with the two worlds the thread originator plays in (although each are full of solid owners I "know"), but both of them started in summer '06. Leagues formed back then, when everyone was a n00b, got unbalanced. Without exception. Maybe his leagues improved (and I suspect they have), but I guarantee he built his powerhouses at the expense of guys who learned more slowly.
