Phelan Shootout XIII (Season 19) Topic

CUrry, Trailing Eastern 15 - 13 in the first half, goes on a 29 - 9 tear. Game over? Not quite. Eastern makes several runs, getting it under ten multiple times in the second half but can't quite close the deal. For CUrry, the star: Hill, has 20 points on 7 - 11 shooting. For Eastern, the star is Dahl, who has a valiant 23 points and ten rebounds on 9 - 17 shooting.

Maryville defeats martin luther witha strong second half effort, finally taking a good lead about halfway through the second half and slwoly building it to a solid win. The Star for Maryville was Mancha, with 22 points on six of twelve shooting, 5-8 from three. In the losing effort, Lighty provided 6 points and twelve rebounds.

(Well, there are two game reports anyway)

arssanguinus....good work man!

Everyone is invited to post game recaps, interesting tidbits from games, etc... I really do enjoy doing the recaps, but just got caught up in stuff today. A couple tourneys ago, ericksonp did an outstanding job with recaps while I was unable to do them.

Anyone who wants to, feel free. I should be able to get back on track tomorrow *crosses fingers*

Game 5 Highlights

Um...yeah. 5 games, nothing too exciting to report about. In fact, it's been awhile since a Shootout round didn't have a close game. Rowan's Steven Wilcox led all Shootout scorers in this window with 33 points against Martin Luther.

Game 7 Highlights

#23 William Paterson 75
Curry 72

William Paterson, desperately trying to hold onto their Tp 25 ranking after starting as preseason #10 and working as high as #6, goes into Curry and pulls off the victory. After a tight opening 5 minutes, Curry sprinted out in the middle of the first half to take a 13 point lead, but WPU stayed in matters, closing the defecit to a mere point at halftime. In the 2nd half, neither team could get more than 4 points of separation until WPU went ahead by 5 points with 3 minutes to go. In the end, WPU held up to take the victory. Game high scorers were the WPU backcourt tandem of Funchess and Marini with 13 points apiece.

#17 U.S. Coast Guard 64
Richard Stockton 57

USCG also pulls of a road win to most likely keep their Top 25 ranking intact for the end of non-conference. Stockton clawed back from an early 8-point defecit to briefly take a lead late in the first half, before USCG rebounded to go into the locker room up 3-points. RSC never was able to get traction however in the 2nd half and USCG was able to coast to the finish line. Game high scorers tied with 13 points each were Parsons from USCG and Johnson from RSC

Game of the Day

Averett 68
#24 Rowan 70 (2OT)

Generally speaking, when one team NEVER has a lead in the first 40 minutes of a game, you would think that the game would have been won handily by the other team. That may be true in general, but it certainly was not the case last night at Rowan. Averett pushed the issue for 50 minutes last night before finally running out of gas. Rowan jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 21 seconds elapsed in the game and did not trail for the next 47 minutes. In fact, aside from the opening tip, the game was only tied 3 times, and not at all until the 2:09 mark of the 2nd half. Rowan led by between 3-6 points for most of the game, but couldn't put Averett away. At the 2:09 mark, Averett completed a 9-2 run over 2 1/2 minutes to tie the game finally at 51, and the game went to Overtime at 53.

In the 1st overtime, Rowan again went out to a 4 point lead and was up by 5 with 17 seconds to play after Steven Wilcox hit a pair of FT's. Averett came down the court and Raymond Hannah hit a 3 with 9 seconds to cut the leadt to 2 points. Averett fouled with 7 seconds to go, putting Rowan's Joseph Denzer on the line to shoot 2 FT's. Denzer made the first but, with an opportunity to ice the game, he missed the 2nd shot. Averett cleared the board, got the ball into the hands of Adam Smither and Smither hit the 3 at the buzzer to force the game into a 2nd Overtime period.

In the 2nd overtime, Rowan again scored first, but again, Averett refused to go away. At the 2:35 mark of the 2nd overtime, Averett finally got the lead at 65-64. However, it was short-llived as Rowan's James carpenter sank a 3 on the ensuing possession to give Rowan a lead they would not relinquish again. Averett finally succumbed in the last 2 minutes to a Rowan team that would not be denied.

I was excited just reading in the play-by-play, but I might give that us, and just wait for the recap! Thanks Red, good work. Nice job Coast Guard too even though it's painful to say!

lol Connor you were killing us before you joined the Shoot-out. This year has been my toughest schedule I have played. And now I need Richard Stockton to beat big Kap at Washington to even tie their shootout record. Oh and I have to beat Curry for the first time too.

Game 8 Highlights

#23 William Paterson 74
Eastern 71

William Paterson finishes non-conference play strongly with a 2nd narrow road victory in a row. This was a game that saw each team take a large lead, only to have the other come back and keep it a close game. Eastern held a 9 point edge in the first half before WPU closed it to 2 at the half. Then, in the 2nd half WPU went out to a lead, had Eastern come back to tie, then WPU went out to an 11 point lead before holding on to win by 3. Joe Dahl from Eatern led all scorers with 19 points, while WPU was led by Stephen Funchess' 18/10 double-double effort.

#4 Rockford 70
#24 Rowan 64

In the final matchup between ranked teams for this Shootout, Rockford rebounded from a shaky first half to pull away with a hard-fought road victory. Rowan appeared to be in control late in the first half with an 11 point lead. Rockford managed to cut the margin to 7 points heading into the locker room, where Coach serb0649 made some adjustments and reminded his players why they are a Top-5 team. Undeterred by a fast start to the 2nd half by Rowan, Rockford began their comeback 4 minutes into the 2nd half, chipping away at Rowan until they grabbed a 1 point leat with 7:50 to go. From there, the teams went back and forth until the 2 minute mark, when Rockford put the game away. Joseph Smyth from Rockford was the high-scorer with 19 points on 6-10 from the field.

Game of the Day

#4 Washington (MO) 58
Richard Stockton 56

Washington (MO) led by Coach bigkap rode out a furious 2nd-half comeback attempt by Rochard Stockton to clinch an unbeaten non-conference schedule, an 8-0 Shootout record, and their 2nd Phelan Shootout Championship.

Washington led by 10 points, 46-36 with 12 minutes to go. Pver the next 8 minutes however, Richard Stockton went on a 16-5 run to take a 52-51 lead with 4 minutes to play. An exchange of FT's tied the game at 53 with 3:47 to go and the score remained like that for the next 2 minutes until Washington finally hit a bucket to move to 55-53. RSC was unable to hit any baskets down the stretch until the 3 at the buzzer which was too little, too late.

Washington (MO) and bigkap becomes the first 2x Phelan Shootout Champion since reddevil19 and William Paterson went back to back in Shootouts V-VI.

Congratulations to bigkap for an impressive run through the field in Shootout XIII. I think we all agree that an 8-0 performance in this event is no small accomplishment.

The Wall of Champions has been updated.

Best of luck to everyone in Conference play!!

. . .now THAT was a strange second half. Never seen that many Free throws in a half.

I like Grider. I think next year will be much better for me.

COngrats, Washington.

Thanks!!! I felt going into this season that this was my best team ever, but I'm still surprised to get through this caliber of competition unblemished. I guess this means my mediocre coaching won't catch up to me until the NT :(
10/23/2009 3:39 PM
Congrats bigkap. And arssanguinus we like to foul at the coast guard, make people shoot free throws to beat us. And you did.
10/23/2009 3:49 PM
Well, could you pass on to other teams I am playing to try that strategy as well? I am glad I made the last minute lineup changes - literally last minute - that I did.

10/23/2009 4:30 PM
Nice work Bigkap.
10/23/2009 5:15 PM
Congrats bigkap. This is one of my best teams I've put together and you managed to get the best of us. Keep collecting those Shootout trophies.
