I'm trying to get through several Schneider songs myself...all older material. I had never heard of the guy before this thread.

so, what do you think?

I'll reserve a more complete analysis after I have listened to a few album's worth of material. He certainly has talent. On first review, I like his "country" soundings songs the most.

i listened to most of each of the 3 albums you recommended wylie......ill post my comments soon.

a neat topic to discuss would be overlooked masterpieces by major iconic artists...albums that the major critics may not have appreciated - enemies of the artist - but we know are absolute true works of genius just waiting for their eventual eternal day in the sun.

walls and bridges reviewed above is one such album...simply a brilliant album in every respect....

ok...bob schneider...im still listening and will continue but i wanted to weigh in...i have not gone to his wikopedia article...this un- biased and unvarnished.
i think he is worthy of being considered one of the top acoustic troubadours from the past 20 years but not top top tier but obviously very good.
i can see him as someone who started out in small venues and garnered a well deserved loyal following.
the issues i have is a sameness of songs from album to album...lyrics which can be good but not providing the wisdom or the charm or poetry of the great lyricists.
often times he hits a beautiful note but disappointingly does not bring it home......still the songs are good and it is easy to see why you are a huge fan.
the rock album was surprisingly good and reminded me of early bob seger on max rager.

One thing I would like to point out is that he is a lot funkier live then he comes across on his CDs. First time I saw him live I was very surprised.

i figured he connects well with his audience.....

Been listening to a couple early Doobie Brothers albums. Their 1st album, "The Doobie Brothers" and "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits". Both have good tracks that are never played on radio.

From the 1st album - Nobody & Feelin Down Farther are especially good.
From Vices - Eyes of Silver, Another Park Another Sunday, Tell Me What You Want, Daughters of the Sea stand out.
Toulouse Street and The Captain and Me are decent albums. The band changed completely when McDonald joined. From that point, I like individual songs rather than entire albums. I hate "You Belong to Me" as much as I like "What a Fool Believes" and so on.
Yeah, the McDonald stuff is good for what it is, but I don't consider it The Doobie Brothers. After Tom Johnston & the Doobies got back together, they did the "Cycles" album in 1989. The track "Need a Little Taste of Love" from that album is a pretty good tune.

It's a cover of an Isley Bros tune but with the Doobies' guitar & harmonies sound.

Steve Miller Band...I like their early stuff and their mid/late 70s stuff.

I instinctively clap five times when I hear El Paso or Texas.

I was listening to Steve Miller's Greatest hits just a couple of weeks ago. I agree with you, gomiami!

although I must say, the lyrics to The Joker are some of the stupidest lyrics I have ever heard!

Yeah, well...it's not like the lyrics to Abracadabra or Jet Airliner are Nobel Laureate-worthy. I just love their sound.
