According to the Detroit Booth News, the Red Wings won't re-sign impending unrestricted free agent goalie Ty Conklin.

Conklin, 33, made $750,000 this past season and the paper suggests he'll likely double his salary on the open market.

Another one of these deals with a couple of low salary years tacked on at the end when the player will be in his 40s. It seems like Holmgren is jumping on the new trend, expecting the player to retire before the end of the contract so the player will have earned his money and the team is off the hook for the rest of the cap hit, while getting a lower cap hit throughout the bulk of the contract.



Except I believe in this case since the extension doesn't kick in until after Pronger turns 35 the cap hit will count for all seven years, even if he retires. So that's nice.
