I think the Pirates have been raking in money for quite some time without attempting to field a winning team. Now that the "newness" of their park has worn off, they have to do something else.
There has been some noise from MLB about cutting off revenue sharing to teams that aren't attempting to compete. The sooner that happen, the better. The Pirates are the HBD owner who wants to build a WS winner with nothing but pre-arb players.
To be honest, the Pirates have been irrelevant for so long, I'd be hard-pressed to name 5 of their players let alone their needs.
mitch "volunteered" to be the poster child for my tougher stance on soft tanking. You can't use training camp pitchers in the bigs and have better options in your minors or 27m in unused payroll while claiming "I'm not part of the problem." He's not the only one but he's the only one who tried to defend his actions as "not a problem." The others, I assume, decided to keep quiet and not do it next season.
