My quick thoughts on my team by round, as inspired by bds:
1. Durant - already explained. Tons of high-usage, high-efficiency seasons. Doesn't hurt me anywhere except OREB
2. Chandler - wanted to match Durant with a high-efg board lord. "Board lord" may be overselling it with him because his DREB in some seasons is only OK, but he basically fit the bill.
3. Lucas - love him in this format. But I probably underestimated how many good low-usage bigs are out there; see Unseld below. Note: I didn't pay enough attention to the fact that this locked me in to two low-usage bigs.
4. Mullin - a misstep. I fell in love with two great seasons - 89-90 and 96-97 - and his overall solid depth of usable seasons. But what I really needed to do here was draft a PG; Derek Harper or Jrue Holiday. Other decent wings would have been there in the late 5th - heck Mullin could have been there - but my PG board was ravaged (and I should have seen that coming). And while good, Mullin doesn't provide the rebounding or D that I probably needed to secure at this spot.
5. LIllard - I like Dame in this format. As someone said, I'd love him even more if I had his killer 19-20 season (but then he wouldn't have been around in the 5th). He makes up for mediocre efg in most seasons with a really high FT percentage (a theme with Durant and Mullin as well), though that is undervalued in the SIM. And he's very consistent across five seasons, making him easier to build around. But this left me in bit of a tricky situation defensively on the wing, which helped contribute to me picking...
6. McMIllan. Not a bad value at this spot, I don't think; while only for 2000ish minutes, five seasons provide very solid high-defense, high-assist, low-usage PG play with solid rebounding, too. I planned to basically have Durant/Lillard/Mullin covering two high-usage spots in the lineup and then a lower-usage, higher-defense guard. The problem: with two low-usage bigs, I couldn't afford McMillan's sub-14% usage in most seasons, because I'm risking paying the team usage penalty often. The pick here should have been Paul Pressey, who is messier than McMillan but would have provided the usage I needed with basically the same defense and assists.
7. Unseld - one of the best values of the entire draft, in my opinion. Mitigated by the fact that I already had Lucas, a very similar player. But even if Unseld is getting 1000-2000 backup minutes instead of starter's minutes - he'll probably start for one or two teams - there wasn't a better 1000-2000 minute backup available. Another blow to my already iffy defense, though; keep in mind Chandler only has two 90-defense seasons.
8. Harrell - I thought he would go earlier. I know he only has one starter/sixth man season and two 1000-minute backup seasons, but there just weren't many guys with 60+ efg% seasons left at this point of the draft, particularly at his usage level. His best season could win me a league; it may have to for me to have a chance. That season will likely push KD to SG for at least one season.
9. O'Quinn - I thought hard about picking him instead of Unseld in the 7th and never thought he'd be around here. Three great backup seasons with two things my front line badly needed - 70+ defense and good efg% at a higher usage than most Chandler/Lucas seasons. He should keep me out of the team penalty and keep my defense competitive for several hundred minutes in those three seasons, which could be key.
10. Brandon Roy - he has one great season that I love and that should get him drafted in the ODL every year (though the rest of the league doesn't seem to agree). One other decent season. Two others where he hopefully won't play too much but can at least help me keep enough usage on the floor. One key benefit of most of his seasons: he can back up Lillard at the 1 and Durant at the 3, which allows me to pair a couple of good, lower-usage Mullin seasons with McMillan at the 2. Another thing he shares with Lillard and Durant - low fouls. Plus really low turnovers for a high-usage guy.
11. Delonte West - needed someone with credible D and assists - and preferably higher usage than McMillan - to pair with Nate at the 1 for the seasons where Lillard is playing the 2. His 05-06 season is very good and a couple of others are fine.
12. Bob Gross - a backup plan as a lower-usage guy in case I'm getting killed on the boards or D. Lots of fouls and turnovers but tons of offensive rebounds for a guard, plus high efg%, good defense, and a handful of assists.
The biggest problems I expect to have with some of my teams, in order: (1) defense, (2) sufficient usage, (3) rebounding (the bigs are fine but the perimeter guys are not that great).
