THE HOUNDS OF THE BASKERVILLES
the british govt has now officially responded to the leaked cables
get a load of this.....
1. they stand by the ambassador...no way will he be dismissed or dissed in any way and he has the full confidence of the p.m. and m.
2. the leaks.....not the comments.... are unfortunate and they dont reflect the close relationship with THE UNITED STATES.....( no mention of trump )
3. none of the leaked statements are repudiated or rejected or contradicted.
absolutely incredible.
and this is our best friend.....the well respected president trump.
I am assuming that you are getting this from an American source, such as The Huffington Post or similar.
The British Press, such as The Guardian (which is a center-left to left daily) describes it in more detail and it is not exactly what you have described here. Jeremy Hunt, the British Foreign Secretary and a leading candidate to replace outgoing P.M. May as leader of the Tories, said that while he did not agree with all of Darroch’s comments, it was vital that diplomatic staff “feel that they are able to express those frank views” and that the basis for a successful diplomatic service was “the free exchange of information and opinions, and the understanding that we’re not always going to agree with each other but we want to know what people around the world are thinking”. That's what they are fully defending. Hunt went on to say “It’s a personal view and there will be many people in this building who don’t agree with that view and indeed I don’t agree with some of the views that we saw in those letters,” he said. “I think the US administration is highly effective and we have the warmest of relationships and a partnership based on standing up for shared values.”
If you want to know what is happening in Britain, reading the British press rather than our own may give you a clearer picture.
thank you..thats much clearer but the response was very weak in its mandatory defense of trump...you have to admit that.
not exactly inspiring defense of trump.
Yeah...It was, no doubt, a weak apology to Trump, if it could be read as an apology at all. It was also not an iron-clad defense of the foreign service (diplomatic corps) in general. The bottom line is the British are embarrassed by the entire situation.and wish it would end ASAP, even better would be yesterday.
I am surprised the answers are as candid as they are. Usually, diplomats talk a lot and say absolutely nothing at all.
