I'm not content at my current job. The commute is tough (75 miles each way) and I've been having issues with my new boss for the past 6 months.

I've been in sporadic contact with my past employer. Would it be wise to look into going back (haven't worked there in 4 years) or should I just move on even though my job search has been fruitless since December.

You your previous job for a reason. If nothing has changed, you won't be content there either. I would not quit my current job before finding another job. Happy don't pay the bills. Additionally, I think most people are not content at their jobs. It's human nature to think the grass is greener on the other side of the hill. It usually isn't. It's just the other side of the hill.
