then there's the fact that we are still over the cap (without morrison), and the season starts in two days.  is there something i'm missing, nick, because i didn't think we were allowed to do that.  :>
Injuries man... Langkow 5.5, Kotalik my balls 3.6, Moss, Stajan.. all iR

i actually like morrison.  at least when he used to play for van he was decent.  lots of speed.  good team player.  maybe he's getting a little old, but sutter is so damn afraid of actually playing a rookie, morrison would be better than signing another goon.   :>
He's a Canuck and he couldnt make their squad and then he makes ours???... would rather see Meyer or even Sutter playing instead of this washed up old guy... dont know why Sutter keeps going for these old dudes

Though we are sad at Center:
1. Jokinen
2. Backlund
3. Morrison
4. Meyer/Sutter/Conroy

how long are they out for though.  cause we are almost two million over the cap still.  i guess sutter knows what he's doing.  well, at least somewhat.  :>

Sutter knows what he's doing??? Hmmm... Kotalik trade last season (pretty close to the worst trade in team history, 2nd only to the infamous Gilmour trade); then go out resign Jokinen??? He knows what he's doing???

They should've gassed him after last season...one more season for to F things up even more!!!

Heck if he hadn't made the Kotalik trade the Flames would be under the cap right now (even with the signing of Jokinen)...instead now he is forced to do a Salary Dump type trade... the only thing they have to offer is a D-man...

Sutter has no clue... I would be a real fan of dumping Staios.. another great move by Sutter when we were already salary restrained for this year...

it was mostly sarcastic ag.  i was more referring to the fact that if he doesn't sort out the cap, the league will step in and do it for him.  i agree with the kotalik trade, though jokinen might be a decent signing at what he's making.  he's a big strong net presence, and that is something we don't have.  if he can get his points production back on track he'll be worth it.  tanguay too could be a steal at what he's getting.  he's still a great passer.  i'm not saying it's going to happen, and if it doesn't, sutter's gonna lose his job over it, which isn't a bad thing, but calgary could still have a decent season.  have to wait and see.  :>

Ugh.  I'll say more if I think of something better to say.

I know g-m, but that Jokinen is ... well a joke. It's like pulling milk out of the fridge finding out it's sour and putting it back in planning to try again in a couple of days..it might be good then??
He doesn't fit into the style of play the Sutters want. Yea if he's willing to go to the net and be pest there...sure BUT he's not that kind of player..I think the work is soft.

Tanquay I do like. The biggest problem is the pressure the team is under to win etc.. therefore the Sutters have no patience for young players. What they should do with Backlund is put him the #2 or 3 line and keep there all season long and give him some power play time... NO MATTER WHAT. BUT what the Sutters will do is put him a on mostly likely the #4 and if goes 5-6 games without a point or something....press box or back to the AHL! Actually it's what the flames have been doing for a LONG time. Unless the youngster excels right away and has no up & downs... they pull them etc

Actually to put that on Sutter is a little unfair, it's the market mainly... Calgary Fans want a winner NOW and that puts the pressure on the team (management) to WIN. This creates a low tolerance for the ups and downs of young players at the NHL level (which the large majority will have). So instead they push for vets etc... the problem is vets cost!! The good vets cost a lot!! Henceforce you now have cap issues!!

Do we go through the LONG list of vets etc the team has gone through over the past say 8-9 years?? The only one that worked out was Mike Cammalleri but he wanted to test the FA Market no matter what...so otherwise it's one vet after another who "had" a good year or two elsewhere and Flames hoping he'll rekindle it in Calgary. Sound familar? Sounds like what people are saying about Jokinen, Tanquay, Kotalik etc etc etc etc etc

i agree ag, it's not all on sutter, but if he keeps trying to win "this year" we're not gonna win this year, or next year, or the year after that, and so on.  if he wants to keep his job long term, he needs to start planning for the present AND the future.  trading away dustin boyd after playing him on the fourth line with a couple goons for half of a couple seasons was just stupid.  nobody can develop or even produce in that situation.  i agree with backlund.  i'd say put him on line one or two all season.  it's not like we have a lot of star power to warrent bumping him down to line four, regardless of how he's playing.  the only good thing about a lot of these veterans is that they are at the point in their careers where they are willing to be team players.  if morrison is told he's playing on line three, or even line four, he'll accept it and go out and do the job he's given.  the downside of some of the moves sutter has made (with the chances on veterans or young players) is that when they actually do work out, we usually can't afford to keep the players because some other team is willing to offer them more money.  :>

as for jokinen, i didn't think he played too bad in calgary the last time around.  the games i watched him play, he was playing tough and crashing the net, doing everything he was supposed to, he just wasn't finishing.  i think it was probably a combination of psychological and bad luck.  i still think he could work out in calgary if he can get his mind back in the game.  :>

We'll see. I just can't help the feeling of deja vu with this team...every season 'IF" this vet can or will or ...something. This season is no different an awful lot of 'IFs" and therefore I don't see the result changing. Until that changes, the resutl will not change

Yep Boyd was good example of how this team handles it's young talent
10/6/2010 1:26 PM
I never like Boyd, small brittle forward... but then again, as gm said it could be cause he never had a chance to show his play

I still dont care about winning tomorrow, would rather win now, but I do agree this tactic the sutters are taking of reclamation projects is getting "old"... Jokinen may be better since he's cheaper... but I am not a believer.. the guy is lazy and a joke... but when he wants to play he rocks it.. so there is a "possible" with him.... tanguay will only do as good as the guys around him, he will not lead the change
10/6/2010 4:23 PM
Sorry but nick that is the whole source of the Flames problems...the "win now" attitude.  Instead giving a youngster a shot, and letting him develop etc...go with an FA with some 'IF's.  A real good example of this is in net..the Flames have a couple high pick goalies in their system...instead they go out and get 'who' as Kipper's back up??

There are not willing to put up with 'up and downs' the vast majority of prospects will have, BEFORE they become a steady NHL player.  Heck there not that many Crosby's, Alexander the Great's etc out there.  A good example is the Blackhawks... you think all that young ta;emt were STARS from day 1... They stayed the course and looked where it got them..  The Flames are in No Man's Land right now..that's too bad cause there is some talent in the farm system Sutter hasn't traded away..
10/6/2010 7:08 PM
vancouver's another good example ag.  they have their core of good players, but they also usually have a rookie or two on the team every year, and a few of them develop into the core of good players.  in today's NHL, you HAVE to play the rookies.  they are a cheap player that allows you to pay your expensive ones to stick around.  three years at entry level salary.  don't waste it on half seasons or fourth line play.  or even if they are on the fourth line, at least give them someone to work with instead of a couple goons that score less than ten points a year.  :>
