Players use to regress to like 97 max in speed on rollover no matter where they were at seasons end... I don't remember them all.

if seble reads all this, I hope he can make more sense out of it than i seemingly can, if he even remotely gets this right, all i can say is wow, maybe his next project should be usa unemployment, or finding a way for liberals and conservatives to get along, or maybe world hunger

I agree with oldave, lots of great post with lots of great points.

Whatever seble ends up doing, I sure hope the general HD population (and not just the veterans here on the forums) give it a chance, because HD can not afford another wave of players leaving. I fear there is a general negative reaction to any changes, and the more drastic the changes, the more the negative reaction. Unfortunately, I am bracing myself for the worst in this regard.

I think Mets is right that the talent curve is askew and that does make minor things much more important. I remember a guy I used to play poker with,

I think we talked about this once ... you came up playing with a lot of the biggies in NYC, right? I'm playing in one or two WSOP satellites this weekend at the Horseshoe (really great poker room in Indiana).

he was a great gamesman period world class backgammon, chess, gin, the whole gamut, and he use to say if a game is 98% luck and 2% skill then it's really 100% skill, because that 2% is going to seperate you and I.

That is true, with the caveat that it has to be over the long haul. As you well know, on a given hand or night anyone can take anyone, but over the long haul, the cream will rise to the top. (And I hope it's more than 2% skill.)

When I first heard him say it I dismissed it as semantics, but I realize now he's right. The thing is, the higher the luck factor in a game the more permutations it takes to find out who has the most skill. And I think that's the problem with people's expectations of HD is that we all have different expectations of how many permutations it should take to prove who has the most skill.

On one extreme are the guys who every time there is an upset say the engine is broken and how could my team have possibly lost that game. As we've seen on the forums there is usually a very simple explanation for why they lost. Not sure what the other extreme is, but I would guess that right now LOstmyth doesn't think there is a helluva lot of luck in HD. He's probably fairly confident that the skill factor is 100%.:)

But as far as players go, maybe it's the same thing, maybe that 2% that seperates two guys is a big difference. Or maybe their "hidden" attributes like being teen wolf etc are what makes the difference, I dunno.

Good analogy and good point. That's definitely something I scaled back on recently. But when seble himself says the engine is in bad shape, that's pretty damning.

That said, it seems to me that most of the vets would like to see more skill/strategy introduced to the game.

And it does make me happy to see the several threads we've had over the last few weeks filled with savvy coaches debating interesting strategic/philosophical points.

I mean, it's not as good as "check out the she-bang" message, but it'll do.

My 2 cents on the engine vs player distro question:

there is an issue with players over- or under-performing at all levels, maxed out or not-- I have a d2 PG who could play for my A+ NC State team, and he has been very mediocre in d2 for 2 of his 3 seasons.

There are also teams who can play D well with no IQ, matchup issues where theoretical studs get destroyed by ratings bums on a regular basis, and myriad other game/PBP oddities. so there's definitely an engine issue.

does that mean thinning out the tail wouldn't help? not at all. but in my mind, it means we need more than that...

now about this phrase "maxed out", I've got our trademark lawyers looking into it.....

Oh, the irony.  The original poster of this thread just won the Allen NT at UNC...and didn't lose a single early entry to the NBA draft.  Sour grapes on my part, obviously, because my second round flameout lost three players (two early entries and a transfer).  Meanwhile, the four teams in the final four lost a combined ZERO - that's right, ZERO - early entries to the NBA draft.  How's that for some equity?
