Unfortunately I'm going to have to rush my response a bit since it's waaay late and I've got an early morning tomorrow. I had the same initial reaction when I first saw the results - I was surprised to see a few guys with lower SPD rate so highly. King, Huth, and Phillips all have PA ratings of 70 or higher which is pretty remarkable for incoming DIII freshmen. That being said, it could be that I need to throw more weight on the SPD category - I'll have to mull that over some and see how it affects other areas. I'm also open to considering the opinions of others as well. A couple other notes:
1.This system is an attempt to be offensive/defensive set agnostic. As such, I have to be careful about how I weight categories. As an example, at SMCM I run the press and motion. Therefore, I personally value SPD very highly and tend to not recruit as heavily for defense (ever look at SMCM’s defensive ratings?). This is probably not a great strategy for a Triangle/M2M team. With that in mind, when rating all recruits (and not for a specific O/D) I need to ignore these types of things and look more at raw skills across the board. In this respect, the Red Ratings do not correspond to how I rate recruits for my own team.
2.As for WE, the Red Ratings don’t consider it very heavily. Not to say it’s not important, but these ratings are more focused on raw skills and less on potential. Just because a guy may be the best prospect coming out of HS, doesn’t mean he’ll finish that way. I personally have never recruited guys like King, Holman or Mayhew and likely never will. In fact, they never even showed up on my radar b/c I have a much high threshold for minimum WE. However, these players still have premium skill levels and should be evaluated on these merits.
Just thought I would offer some brief insight and opinion. I’m more than open to further discussion on this and would like to hear other’s opinions. I’m always willing to incorporate suggestions.
FYI, I’ll be out of pocket for the next several days so I may not get to any updates until I’m back. In the meantime, I’ll publish the SG ratings…
