You have it right.  If it is a 400PA season, you need to make sure when you select your own AAA you have players who can spell him.  Part of the reason I made the league with draft your own AAA was to fill holes at C and pitcher.  Bonds created a new set of problems.  But I wanted him in the league.  You can have super high quality for 60ABs or good quality for 120ABs for the salary level I allowed for AAA drafting.
