Curious how others viewed the 1st pick in this era;  wasn't overly sold on Ryan as #1 but couldn't settle on anyone else. Your thoughts ??

other than carlton early in the decade, there isn't a dominate ace, like the ones who will show up in a few years, gooden, clemens etc. i think its a solid pick.

i agree with the Ryan pick as well...solid for the entire decade

I agree..  Ryan is the best of the guys with a decent 'self life' available in the draft, as far as pitchers go.  Sure Carlton is better for the next few season BUT after that ...

Actually on an overall basis 1980 is kind of a transitional time...stars of the 70s in their twilight years and stars of the 80s a couple of seasons away really.  So I  think if you asked anyone, Ryan is really the best pick.

I have had Ryan and Gossage in another progressive since the beginning of their careers.

with 2 yrs left in career Ryan has won 415 games!   from 80-89 he won 186 games

Gossage has 3 yrs left, and has 561 saves so far
