i love the lyrics to the joker..thats rock and roll....esp summer rock and roll.
anyone know the story of my darkest hour ?
Without looking it up online (i.e., cheating) I remember that threre is a tie-in to The Beatles. Considering Brave New World came out around the same time as Abbey Road...the relationship amongst The Beatles was pretty dysfunctional by then.

you are on the right track.....steve miller was invited to a recording session but only paul came so he and steve miller recorded my hour of darkness......just the 2 of them....paul played drums and maybe a few other instruments......they turned out a great song.

although I must say, the lyrics to The Joker are some of the stupidest lyrics I have ever heard!
Yeah, well...it's not like the lyrics to Abracadabra or Jet Airliner are Nobel Laureate-worthy. I just love their sound.
don't get me wrong. I love the song. Just that the lyrics are incredibly stupid.

Have another recommendation - The Bottle Rockets. Not really sure how to describe them...maybe outlaw southern rock??? They are kind of raw sounding and there is a lot of humor in their lyrics. Here are a few CDs I'd suggest listening to:
The Brooklyn Side
24 Hours a Day
Blue Sky
Lean Forward
Zoysia
Brand New Year

The Michael Stanley Band. Group out of Cleveland in the late 70's - 80's. Midwest rock & roll band. Good song writing.

Heartland & MSB albums are pretty good all the way through. North Coast album not bad.

Nice list. All good stuff. LOVE 24 Hours A Day!

Were you guys referring to "My Dark Hour" earlier (Steve Miller Band circa 1973 or 74)??

I love that track. I bought the LP "Anthology" (Steve Miller Band) when it 1st came out and always wondered about the collaboration with Sir Paul.
Can anyone flesh out the full story, more completely?

Yes...and I think it's more like '69 or '70.

I think I have one of their CDs...I'll have to check when I get home.
Now that I think about it, is the Michael Plume Band, not the Michael Stanley Band.

24 Hours a Day was the first Bottle Rockets CD I heard and still my favorite!

as far as Leonard Cohen, he was a great songwriter. Not a big fan of his voice.

Oh, I agree. Steve originally called the song - "Maurice, The Lovey Dovey, Lovey Dovey, Lovey Dovey Space Cowboy" but Capitol Records asked for a shorter title so it would fit better on the vinyl label.

Steve spells it pompatus (it's in the lyrics of a song from an earlier album)...and I have no idea what the hell it means.
