2) Assembling a team that you think has a fair but uncertain chance to be a contender for a playoff spot, and working hard/smart to achieve a post-season berth?

3) Having a team that you realistically have low expectations for and having them surprise you by achieving a post-season berth?

Building a team and making adjustments brings me the most ballball joy. Using that as a guideline, I'd say #2 is the closest answer.
