St. Paul wins the title over Milwaukee.

In the first round of the 2007 player draft, the Spectres select pitcher Dallas Braden (at #12).

In the second round, Montreal takes middle infielder Asdrubal Cabrera.

In the third round, Montreal grabs another young pitcher - Homer Bailey.

2007 preview

The starting rotation is undoubtedly deeper than at any time in the last decade or so, with six pitchers capable of making regular starts. There are no Cy Young contenders in the mix, but all should keep the team in games. The bullpen, unfortunately, has not improved much from last year's disaster.

On offense, some of the big guns (Griffey Jr., Delgado) are starting to show their age, and the youngsters (with the exception of Carl Crawford) have not been picking up the slack.

If the bullpen can be somewhat effective, the Spectres could finish with another winning record, but in a resurgent division it's doubtful they can compete for a playoff spot.

Montreal starts the season at San Diego.

Game 1: For one game, at least, things go according to plan. Carl Crawford starts the season by hitting a triple, then steals home during the next at bat. He later hits a home run. Khalil Greene has three RBI, and Kelvim Escobar throws a complete game 4-hitter as the Conquistadors bow 6-1.

Game 2: Rookie pitcher Gabriel Westrich has a nice debut (six innings, two runs allowed), but the Spectres get only a solo home run from Carlos Delgado and lose 2-1.

Game 3: San Diego starter Kip Wells walks six Montreal batters but allows only four base hits and no runs in seven innings of work; the Spectres lose again, 6-0.

The home opener will be against St. Louis.

Game 4: The Spectres finally get their bats going; unfortunately they are down 7-0 before scoring. Opening Day starter Shaun Marcum allows three homers and seven runs in the first two innings; the Cthulu roll to an 11-7 victory.

Game 5: Aaron Cook throws eight 4-hit innings and drives home a run as the Spectres beat St. Louis 7-1.

Game 6: Montreal wins their first home series of the year, sending the crowd home happy with a 6-4 victory keyed by Ken Griffey Jr.'s first home run of the season, a grand slam.

We now travel to San Francisco to face the hated 69ers.

Game 7: Michael Cuddyer reaches base five times and scores four runs as Montreal handles the 69ers, 8-3. Kelvim Escobar goes eight innings and wins his second game of the season.

Game 8: Montreal gets 10 hits, eight of them off Frisco starter Greg Maddux, but only one run. Spectre pitchers aren't quite as lucky, and the Niners win 9-1 despite being outhit 10-8.

Game 9: Shaun Marcum gets beat around for the second straight start and Tony Clark's eighth-inning single brings home Juan Pierre with the game-winner as Frisco wins the rubber match 6-5.

The Spectres will return home to face Milwaukee as a final warmup before divisional play begins.

Game 10: The Spectres are helpless before Raul Ibanez, who scores and drives in three, but it's Gary Matthews Jr.'s two-run double in the seventh that utlimately does them in as they lose 5-3 to the Bears.

Game 11: Chad Bradford and Jason Frasor combine for one out and six runs allowed in the eighth as the Bears rally for a 7-4 win.

Game 12: Another eighth-inning rally does in the Spectres. After shutting out the Bears for seven frames, Kelvim Escobar is blistered in the eighth. Trever Miller fares no better. When the dust clears, Milwaukee has five runs and then hangs on for a 5-3 win.

Montreal heads to Pitsburgh to start divisional play. The Spectres are the only team in the division that is under .500.

Game 13: The Spectres put two runs on the board in the first and never look back, turning a close game into a laugher with six runs over the final three frames to beat the Melons 11-3. AJ Burnett goes seven innings for the win.

Game 14: Shaun Marcum has another horrible start and the Melons collect 11 extra base hits (of 17 total) in a 13-0 rout of the Spectres.

Game 15: The Spectres at least get on the board in this one, but are mostly helpless against Matt Garza, dropping a 5-1 decision to Pittsburgh.

Game 16: Jake Westbrook throws six scoreless innings, and then things sort of fall apart. Ryan Dempster allows three runs in the ninth, sending the games to extras with a 4-4 score. Montreal scores three times in the 13th, two on Carlos Delgado's triple, but a tired Brandon Lyon comes out to pitch the bottom half. With two down and a man on, he walks Kenny Lofton. The next three Pittsburgh batters hit RBI singles, and the Melons come back for an 8-7 victory.

We head to Philadelphia next.

Game 17: Gabriel Westrich's second start is nowhere near as effective as his first, and the Cold Stealers outslug the Spectres 11-7.

Game 18: The Spectres manage to turn 12 baserunners into a single run and drop a 7-1 decision to Philly.

Game 19: Shaun Marcum has his best start ofthe season, but still allows five runs in six innings. Philly wins 7-2; Spectres have dropped six straight.

Game 20: Kelvim Escobar strikes out 12 and the Spectres build such a big lead that even a six-run Philly ninth inning is hardly a threat as Montreal avoids a sweep with an 11-7 win.

The first set of interleague play has us facing Cleveland and Kansas City.

Game 21: The visiting Classics are handcuffed by Aaron Cook and the Spectres win their first interleague game of 2007, beating Cleveland 3-1. Khalil Greene hits a two-run homer, his second of the season.

Game 22: Ramon Hernandez has four hits, but it's Ryan Doumit's two-out double in the ninth that drives home Ken Griffey Jr. with the lead run; Ryan Dempster makes it stand up, earning his fourth save in a 6-5 win at Cleveland.

Game 23: Shaun Marcum pitches respectably but the Spectres shut down their bats for the day early and the Blue Devils score a seventh inning run off Chad Bradford to beat the Spectres 4-3.

Game 24: Olympic Stadium serves as John Smoltz's torture chamber as the first eight Spectre batters reach base safely, giving  Montreal a 7-2 lead after one. Ken Griffey Jr. has five hits and the Spectres cruise to a 15-3 win over KC, giving Kelvim Escobar his fourth win.

The Spectres host New York next to finish up the first round of divisional play.

Game 25: Carlos Delgado drives in five runs with a three-run homer and a two-run single to lead the Spectres to a 9-5 series-opening victory against the Mad Men. Ryan Dempster gets the last out with runners at the corners to earn his fifth save.

Game 26: Jake Westbrook throws six scoreless innings and finally gets a decision as the Spectres beat New York 7-3. Carl Crawford and Dan Uggla drive in three runs each.

Game 27: A brilliant start by Shaun Marcum (seven innings, one unearned run) is wasted as Trever Miller and Chad Bradford combine to allow four runs in the eighth and New York wins 5-3.

Game 28: The Mad MEn pound out 17 hits and cruise to an 8-2 win behind Curt Schilling.

The Spectres will face Detroit and Baltimore in this next interleague set.

Game 29: Visiting Detroit Facrocks the Spectres, getting 10 strikeouts from starting pitcher Dustin McGowan and a 3-3, 3 RBI day from catcher Jason Varitek. Montreal falls, 7-0.

Game 30: There is no revenge for the Spectres in the return trip to Detroit, as they manage only four hits in a 4-1 defeat.

Game 31: Four Spectres have three hits each, but it's Ramon Hernandez' only hit, a two-run single through the infield in the eighth, that wins it for Montreal, 6-5 over Baltimore. Ryan Dempster throws a scoreless ninth for the save.

Game 32: Chad Bradford pitches the eighth in Baltimore, trying to protect a 1-0 Spectre lead. He faces three Aureole batters. All reach base. Two score. Baltimore wins, 2-1.

The Spectres head to Houston to face the Lone Stars.

Game 33: The Spectres hit four home runs in the second inning and add two more in the fifth, but still have to rally from a 9-8 deficit in the eighth to send the game to extras. In the 10th, Ramon Hernandez hits a pinch-hit, two-run double, then scores on Melvin Mora's single, as the Spectres top the Lone Stars 12-9.

Game 34: AJ Burnett strikes out 10 in seven scoreless innings and Carlos Delgado hits two home runs as the Spectres make it two straight over Houston, winning 5-1.

Game 35: The series finale goes to extras tied at two. Both teams strand a runner in the 10th. Melvin Mora's two-out double in the 11th puts the Spectres on top. Jason Frasor enters to pitch the bottom half. He hits a batter, then walks two. Bases loaded, one out. Casey Kotchman at the plate. Liner. Center Field. Double. Lone Stars win, 4-3.

Interleague sets with Oakland and St. Paul are next.

Game 36: Carlos Delgado's three-run homer puts Montreal up 4-3 in the seventh, but Oakland's Derek Jeter ties the score in the eighth. In the bottom of that frame, Ryan Doumit doubles to score rookie Clint Liles, who had tripled to lead off the inning. Ryan Dempster pitches a clean ninth and the Spectres win, 5-4.

Game 37: Jake Westbrook throws six scoreless innings, but the Spectre offense does next to nothing and the bullpen allows three runs over the seventh and eighth innings as the Grapes even the series with a 3-1 victory.

Game 38: Khalil Greene leads off the seventh inning with a home run, sparking a five-run explosion that includes two more home runs, and Shaun Marcum gets his first win of the season as the Spectres rally past visiting St. Paul 5-2.

Game 39: Carlos Delgado drives home all three Montreal runs and the Spectre bullpen throws three scoreless innings as the Sarlaacs fall, 3-1.
