Restricted Free agents who will be resigned with a pay raise:
Raymond Hansen and possibly Tanner Glass?
D-men signed for next season:
Bieksa Salo
Edler Ehrhoff (Baumgartner, Alberts are signed god help us if either makes the team)
RFA's who will be re-signed:
O'Brien and Rome
Goal Luongo signed and Cory Schneider RFA
Let's assume that our RFA's get a pay raise that collectively total's 4 million? That will leave the Canuck's aprox. 7 million to spend on free agents.
We need at least 2 quality D-men and 7 million may not be enough cap room to get 2 defencemen, unless we find a team dumping salary, which is how we got Ehrhoff last season.
The above group of players is essentially the same team Minus some depth forwards. We better hope we can sign 2 D-men and a couple of cheap forwards or next season will be shorter than this season as the play-offs may be a stretch......July 1st 2010 Gillis better get us some D-men.
There is alway's plan B. (Randle will like)
Trade Luongo for a sack of pucks and use his 10 million cap hit (new cap space 17 million) to get Cory Schneider 2 stud defencemen and a first line forward........Assuming you can find a taker for Luongo..
I think we will see more changes than listed.
NO change in goal though, Luongo has a no trade clause, and is a 5.3 mil cap hit per year for the next decade. He aint going unless he tells the club he wants to.
Biggest needs are a number 1 and number 2 D man. As wll we need an upgrade somewhere at forward, either a solid 2nd line calibre player, or 2 solid third line players who can penalty kill.
Personally, I think Bieksa and O`Brien should go. Yes they are tough in the regular season, but cost us games in the playoffs. They are 5-6 d-men at best and their salary is too much for that. Alberts stays because his cap hit is low enough for a 6-7 D man. Salo`s salary is also too high for what he brings so shuold go. Most of the forwards are at reasonable cap hits for their skill level. I see one of the small fast forwards being traded for a D man upgrade. Raymond may become too expensive to keep and we have 3 or 4 clones of him waiting in the wings
I actually have not suggested any changes, I am just pointing out that we are a worse team next season unless we get a couple of solid D-men?
Bieksa 3.75 mil cap hit..Impossible to move
Salo 3.5 mil cap hit...impossible to move
Shane Obrien RFA...Can't let him walk for nothing so he is resigned
Sign two D-men for 7 mil?? If this happen's we are not a better team in fact we may still be worse than this year. To suggest that we have 3 or 4 clones waiting to replace Mason Raymond is a joke.....Raymond scored 25 goals last season which tied him for 15th best in the league for goals by a winger. We have to resign him.
The core of this team is in the prime of their career's, we have at best a 4 year window to win. We won't win with Luongo....Randle is correct. I really beleive the only way this core group of players has a chance to win is by getting rid of Lu.
