I do plan to develop Wells as a long range specialist and play him at SF...some of the time. He will work in tandem with a guy with strong low post skills. The way I see it...I start with the high low post and sub in a 3 point guy. That should make it difficult to guard and force a balanced defense. That should open it up for the guys down low.
Or will I?

In regards to my RS this year (Jackson):

This year, unfortunately, I ended up with too many guards.. In retrospect, I should have recruited another big man last season (in place of Roe?) and then maybe I could have made the RS decision that I really wanted to make.. Watts. Honestly, I just couldn't leave that many guards in a lineup to rot, so I chose to throw the RS on jackson.. when he didn't accept it, I didn't realize that the exploit still worked where you could reapply with better luck, so I it knowing he was the player I needed to RS (I felt that Roe would be more of waste of a RS). Having said all of that, this season I really need to recruit another big man in order to have 4 for a rotation.. I've contemplated dropping Roe to make room for a walkon (and thus, another schollie next year). Also, I'd love to throw the RS on Watts next season as a sophomore (if he'll take it). Just wanted to explain my reasoning a bit, and I'm welcome to constructive criticism for those who might have some to share! :)

LOL, I wrote a book on the Jackson/Mendenhall comparison, and then deleted it and did nothing... My main points were.... Today, yes Jackson might be as good or better than Mendy. By their senior season,,,, not a contest,,, Elmo only has one ball to play with.. Jackson will never play enough to overcome the 17pt hit to WE. Thus... as a senior Mendy will near or pass 700 overall, while Jackson will probably be around 620 or so. Mendy will be developed in every category as well as around 50 in D!,,,, which will make him a devastating weapon in my press.
Don't get caught up in the higher speed..... the WE difference and playing time will make Mendenhall a real player as a junior and senior.... now will that hold true and pan out... only time will tell.
I agree with the Lockhart comments also. I told RC when he dropped the RS on him he just wasted a RS. Lockhart will be as good as he can be by his jr year... the RS gives RC one more season tho of enjoying his dominance as a really good big man.

yeah, i never really figured jackson would be all that great.. the WE hit hurt, and it really felt like a wasted RS, but i felt bound by it. plus, jackson will struggle for minutes the next couple of seasons with my plethora of guards ahead of him (like bob said).

What do you guys think about starting Cobbs at SG b/c his weak rebounding. The way I figure then with both low post and perimeter skills he will create matchups problems because he can go down low on small guards or stay on the perimeter on slower guards.

I think he'd be fine at SG, but his LP won't be a factor because he is playing out of his "natural" position.

If you don't play him, the WE might hurt. But if you do, it won't hurt at all.

James Lau isn't *that* good of a player for me. But he's probably going to be the best SG in the conference next year as a 4th year senior.

Lau came to Thomas (and started as a freshman) with a 42 WE -- the exact same as Jackson. Lau had a 52 in SPD and PE and a 37 in BH and P. Jackson has better SPD with 62, but his BH of 57 and P of 54 is pretty similar to Lau's PE rating and Jackson's PE of 34 is very similar to Lau's BH and P ratings.

Lau has finished his junior year with a SPD of 64. The PE is at 81, the BH at 65, and the P at 64.

If you'd start Jackson (and I'm not saying you should), even with the 42 WE you'd probably end up with a player that would start his senior year with approximately 75 in speed, 60 at the perimeter and 80-85 rankings for ball handling and passing along with the IQ of four years of practice.

You have good reason not to start Jackson. But the WE hit didn't really hurt you. He can still be an excellent player if you want him to be. You just have good reason to favor others instead of him.

Cobbs looks like one of those DIII guys stuck in limbo. If you can define his roll for the future this early and stick to it you might have a player. He would be hard to start for me due to the liabilities at RB and DE, as a SF. Not yet a good enough ball-handler to be a starter at the 2. He should be a scorer some-day... but at what cost to the overall team?
He's the type of project that makes DIII the most fun level IMHO.
At DI this type of player just kills you. But in DIII he may be a real good player in the right role.
and as KM said,,, the LP will be wasted if you play him at SG exclusively.

I agree with bob. This situation does make DIII very interesting. I'd play him at the 3, but not as a starter and only if you have strong rebounders down low. I'd look for matchup where the other team is not deep in rebounding rotate him in as your opponent subs.
What about playing him some at the 4? Yes, he doesn't have the REB or DEF, but would it be possible to have him take 3s and bring the other PF out to the perimeter? What effect would that have on rebounding? And if he is a slow defender, would he get out there in time?

Lockhart got the RS this year, Tuttle will get it next year. They will be monsters by their 5th year!

Oh, and the conference player of the year was a 590 this season ... (Donahue, my team). Lockhart should strike fear in the hearts of everyone.

very interesting take km, I thought I might try to start my other SF at PF, then Cobbs at SF b/c then the Per would take the defender away from the basket and he has 45-50 rebounding. Do think that is good enough to warrant a PF start or do you guys think it should be higher.

Funny how sometimes fantasy does imitate real life. It is good to know that I have captured the real UMF so well.
