In MLB, I'd say BC is most prestige after manager. It appears as though the fielding coach duties are split-up into catching, outfield and infield instructor and usually assigned to coaches already on the team. While I don't normally promote Wikipedia research, this article on Wikipedia seems to be pretty legit.

Most teams have a roving fielding instructor as well. This is what the FI in HBD represents and why he has an effect on all levels of your system
Looking further into it a lot of teams seem to be hiring multiple roving fielding instructors now. Wouldn't that be great! We would have to hire 3 FI per team instead of just 1. 1 for OF 1 for IF and 1 for Catchers.

This may just be me, but ill-fitting metal shoes sounds like a very painful experience. I'd sell them, buy some Nikes, and invest the rest.

Never said that. Just saying that the update doesn't seem to change much (which is a good thing). The coaches they've added look to be of the same quality as the existing minor league coaches with passable FI ratings.

The only people who are helped by the update is those who won't look at other levels/positions to fill their coaching staff.

travis and erff: what season #s are we talking about here?

travis, of the remaining minor league coaches, exactly ONE has a fielding rating over 46, so no help there.

What's especially perplexing is that recently retired guys with a 52 Fielding rating want to be the major league FI as their first job.

Then he goes un-hired. Will he maintain this ridiculous "demand" into the next hiring cycle or will he take a minor league BC job?

I hire minor league BC coaches almost exclusively on their fielding rating - partially because I think there's some positive net effect to having a BC with a "skill" that doesn't otherwise exist on the staff daily and partially because it's everyone's job to give jobs to "developing" FI's by keep them employed and improving as FI's for the future.

It's season 15, Griffey world. This is the only coach hiring process I've gone through since the update, which I'd forgotten about until I saw the pool of candidates. They looked the same, skill-wise, as most pools (a bunch of great ones, and then some not-so-good ones), but there was one more coach (21) than teams that needed one (20). Again, not a complaint, just what I noticed.

There might have been a 51 or 52 out there, but that's consistent with my observation. Which is fine with me. I don't like to spend more than $10 million on coaches, so getting stuck with a crummy FI coach is the risk I'm willing to take.
