My all-time top 12 for a conference:

(assumptions - I don't know aliaii so I'm not basing any of these user IDs this off of that - also I may be biased since I'm no longer in every world and may not play some of the newer greats - and lastly - I am certain I will leave some deserving coaches out - sorry)

dedhed1959 ---- 4993-2741 7 NCs (quietly dominates - one of the best imo)

combalt ---- 4027-1739 10 NCs (beat me in a recent Rupp NC w/ Delaware... DELAWARE!!! who does that?!??!)

OR ---- 6773-2334 20 NCs ("The Michael Jordan of HD" - OR set the standard we all hope to achieve)

lostmyth2 ---- 3143-769 18 NCs (If OR is the MJ of HD - lostmyth2 is its Kobe Bryant..... without the rape allegations of course)

porkpower ---- 4088-1842 5 NCs (can bug the crap out of me at times *cough" superclass *cough* - but no doubt a great coach)

Rails ---- 2935-1196 15 NCs (record speaks for itself)

pottle ---- 3130-1663 6 NCs (damn, 6 now? It's been a long time since the Centennial in Iba, eh?)

joelhall32 ---- 2004-660 5 NCs (a shame he retired)

gillispie ---- 5 NCs in 29 seasons.

vandydave ---- 7018-3445 5 NCs (Gotta respect a guy that rarely coaches at the top BCS schools and can still win 7000 games)

mniven ---- 5600-2930 7 NCs ( him a couple solid programs many years ago - he got them to win one place I could not - the national championship)

coach_billyg ---- 939-255 10 NCs (never played against him - but I'd say he's doing something right)

honorable mentions include oldave, oldman_sons, flyer1950, emy, kelby, alblack, gordonbops, bluespruce, Nellie, daalter, AceCards, Plumpy, zhawks.

See, I forgot about Joelhall and I don't know HOW I forgot about Dedhed, he just beat the crap outta me in our CT semis last night.

I did some DI research based upon my above-mentioned post (Time well spent at work) and came up with the following results for the 3 worlds in which I participate. I searched under All-Time lists so no retired coach would be excluded.

Criteria for qualification:

1. 15 NT bids

2. .667 or higher winning percentage in the NT (average Sweet 16 appearance per NT bid)

3. 10 or more drafted players (this was more to sort out the DI coaches versus other levels than as a quanitfier of good coaching).

The results:

Naismith - Clone77, nfet, pottle, ttnorm, meany27, combalt, oldresorter, AceCards, ralinghaus

Wooden - cmthieme, jlovicz, kgoat, fairbanka, schuyler, airjare

Crum - urdanick, jason5, uscalvin, bluespruce, rds_lsu, taz21, oldman, kelby03, lwbraun, wisefella99 and colorblind79

Surprisingly, this pretty simple formula provides a very exclusive list of coaches and ones that would be hard to argue against being great based upon their success.

I like this idea (because it includes my name, heh), so let's see what it's like in Smith, the other world I can see.

jimmybosox, petec, oldresorter, mswilso2, jleo, cpkung, and liamsar

(I miss the cut there by 1 NT game. ajcrawford misses the cut by 2 NT appearances. Some other people are in the same boat I am, but I'm not researching further.)

In Phelan it is Tanner, LM2, Zhawks, Pakeli and yours truly Davey Mac (although I am right at .667
Iba - lostmyth2, pottle, msstrauss, rarlinghaus, combalt, jdberry40, and OR

Allen - pottle, cal bears, kyle lee7, farmlife

I'm glad AceCards has gotten a mention or two. I took over a lowly Div I program from him early in my career and the way he his setting completely changed how I thought about HD.

updated my 12 man conf.

VD - you made the cut! Now go win a title before I catch up - Its been a long time since I've seen your name on the wis homepage ;)

Funny that Billy_G is in the super conference twice. And Joehall's overall record is insane. I always thought people who were that good at this game never retired.

thanks moy. maybe if i'd start actually setting up a non-conference schedule, recruiting ath/spd freaks and running the press i'd win another one.

yeah - I have been out of the HD loop for a while. That's now apparent. I suppose it's okay as long as billy and his alias don't collude ;)

Lol, moy ... you're an old man. But don't listen to anyone here, you keep listening to your 8 tracks and yelling at the kids to stay off your lawn.

I figured someone had to have done it. No surprise that the coach I consider to be the best in HD is the one to accomplish the task (no disrespect meant to OR, I'd put him at 1A. I just think that LM is the best. My personal opinion).

This is emy1013, by the way.

Now it's my time to feel humbled. I've had a bit of success in HD, but those coaches listed here are light years ahead of me and what I've accomplished. I really appreciate the recognition Moy, but I personally don't think I deserve to be included in this group.
2/26/2010 12:57 PM
emy, don't sell yourself short. you are definitely in the discussion.

thanks to everybody who mentioned me, you are all too kind...
2/26/2010 1:11 PM
i'm glad i having a winning record against gillispie! woohoo

and i think this thread leaves out alot of great coaches that are as good as any of these even if they don't have as many championship. osu, bing, roonie, mpollon, narc, and many more!
