Doc was such a horse in Toronto, for a lot of years the only real bright spot on the team. I don't think he would have left, either, if not for the fact that the front office wasn't making an effort to compete and he wanted to be on a contender while he still had something in the tank. I'm glad he had a couple of great seasons with the playoff-bound Phillies (Cy Young winner and then runner-up) before a bad back forced him to hang 'em up.

And yeah, he was a good person in addition to being a terrific pitcher. Always involved with a lot of charities, and a very humble guy when speaking to the media.

he was a favorite throughout his tenure with the phillies....very classy guy......the fans wanted him to wear a phillies cap when he went into the hall of fame...

1990 LIST RANKED

1. SINEAD O CONNER - I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT - a brilliant album...for the ages.....best album of year by a landslide......she could be john lennon's long lost daughter.....tour de force.
2. and 3 tied
POSIES - DEAR 23......THE CRAMPS - STAY SICK
rock and roll is on life support ( as opposed to rock )......but we have these 2 albums in 1990.......there a few lesser songs on the posies album but the rest are not just great..they are lofty...harmonies like the early beatles and real strains of the byrds in a rock and roll concoction.......the cramps are the reincarnation of a more dangerous Elvis Presley .. a tripping hipster rock and roll sex addict...and Lux I Interior has the sneering elvis voice.... elvis if mick jagger instead of the coloniel was his mgr..throw in great 50s-60s kitsch...humor...real roots rock and roll the way it is supposed to be..this is their 4th studio album....fun fun fun.
4. THE REPLACEMENTS - ALL SHOOK DOWN - right there with the preceeding 2........excellent offerings.......no duds.
5. THE TRAVELING WILLBURYS - VOL.3
6. THE INDIGO GIRLS - the female simon and garfunkle......the opening track is one of the year's best

thats it..such a weak year...there are some good albums to mention such as depeche mode - viloater....blue radio - casino......lou reed / john cale - songs for drella...the paul simon album.......they all have their moments.

I like the Sinead album, too.

Another good one is Cowboy Junkies' "Caution Horses" (at the time considered a letdown after "Trinity Sessions" but I think it's very good, a nice mellow album)

And my own personal favorite from 1990, Vic Chesnutt's "Little" -- give it a listen!

i forgot about cowboys..i thought it was 1991.....ill listen to them..i think i remember vic chestnut.
1991 was a much better year...i can tell ahead of time........in the top 3 will be teenage fanclub.......anyone that likes the rasberries and badfinger needs to hear bandwagonesque.

If I may add just one more viewpoint of 1990 music. In 1990 I owned/operated a very small little "music store" in a small town in the NW. CD's were just taking off but we (probably) still sold more cassettes than discs. LP's were basically going away much to my chagrin as I love LP's. Anyway, though I tend to agree that 1990 (that whole era really IMO) generally sucked for good rock and roll (with a few exceptions) and this is why I traveled over to country and country-rock stuff personally during this time. Anyways, in 1990 each week, I ordered, stocked, and manned the sales counter in this small town and got to see what sold locally, plus with the benefit of time, got to see what held up. I might add that locally, this was when rap was just taking off, and over really! Is maybe why Rock sucked, it just didn't sell compared with 2 Live Crew, 2 Short, and all that other rap stuff that I (personally) just never got. That's just a long-winded way to caveat what I say as to not run afoul of the Dinoliner. BUT, you left out a few GREAT releases IMO.
Here they are:
1. Neil Young and Crazy Horse "Ragged Glory" This is a GREAT LP. Aptly named. ragged as hell but just ROCKS. Neil at his peak of Rock guitar playing! Fantastic Disc that I still listen to when I have enough energy for it!
2. Uncle Tupelo "No Depression" This LP created a genre!! Spawned 2 bands Son Volt and Wilco!! Seminal American classic piece of music! Listen to it!
3. Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians "Ghost of A Dog" Quirky and Brilliant. I listen to this all the time still!! Didn't know it was that old!
4. Vaughn Brothers "Family Style" Sales probably benefitted from Stevie Ray's death in that helicopter crash but still it's a good blues/rock LP with Stevie's slashing guitar and Jimmie's vocals and harmonica. A good release that sold well.
5. Bob Dylan "Under The Red Sky" Very underrated Dylan release. Just solid songs and he actually sings em! Contains "Wiggle, Waggle" one of my favorite Dylan jams...... gets you moving! The whole LP, mostly.

Those are probably my top 5 that you missed. Based on my taste and the general opinion of how time has treated the release.
Some personal Honorable mentions would be: The Church "Gold, Afternoon Fix" (I used to listen to this on camping trips alot back then)
Robert Plant "Manic Nirvana" (Not his best but had a couple of stand out tracks)
The Pretenders "Packed", Midnight Oil "Blue Sky Mining" (Rock from down under), Little Feat "Representing The Mambo" (this one is interesting. Little Feat reformed that year and got Craig Fuller (Former P.P.L leader and singer of "Amie") to front the band. The got a LOT of press, toured pretty successfully, sold a fair amount of that one LP and then fizzled and Fuller left the band and went (eventually) back to Pure Prairie League) Anyway the Little Feat LP was one of the more surprising successes of 1990 in music as I remember.
Also, a couple more worth mentioning from my perspective......... The Gear Daddies "Billy's Live Bait", Queensryche "Empire", and Robert Cray "Midnight Stroll" this last one is blues to blues rock but daggone good!

When you add is sales and enthusiasm of the general public in 1990 (based on my observations).....
you got to add in: (even though I may or may not have liked them)

Tesla "Five Man Acoustical Jam" (This one sold like hotcakes where I lived)
Cinderella "Heartbreak Station" (Same Thing)
Concrete Blonde "Bloodletting" (surprising sales for me!!)

Now (FINALLY) There was this band from Tuscon called the Sidewinders....... with a 1990 release named "Auntie Ramos Pool Hall" which received some well-deserved acclaim. But it seems they hadn't secured the rights to the name sidewinders somehow. This disc is solid, solid, SW influenced Rock. Heavy on lead guitar. The same band (primarily) will re-surface in 1993 (under a different name) with a gem of a rock release. A hard rockin' gem that not nearly enough folks know about but that will blow your eardrums loose. (IF you want that)......... but we must wait for the 1993 list.

with postings like that i am sure glad multiplied and squared that you are back in the thread......
as wylie has said we never need to say imo...it is understood that we are always expressing our opinion...we dont expect agreement.
i did put neil young in my 7-11 part of the list..i love neil but i liked the album..didnt love it..same for uncle tupelo..obviously the start for jeff tweedy...i will have to relisten to the dylan album......on my lists i strive for albums that have minimal filler...if an album has 2 killer songs and the rest is weak i dont include it....i like the church..had them in 1989 list.
im truly glad you are back.

ill look up the gear daddies.
11/8/2017 11:56 AM
I had time on my hands this AM lol
TY Dino. Nice words.
You should try to find (and listen to) "Auntie Ramos Pool Hall" Not every track is a "stunner' but overall it rocks and it DOES show the promise of the band, which will be revealed in a couple of years when they hook up with Mike Campbell as producer.
The Gear Daddies are quirky. Upper midwest, I think it was Wisconsin or somewhere. Had a kinda cult following for awhile.
The members split and a couple made some solo LP's. One guy was named Martin Zander...... he had a band called the Hard Ways for awhile. I have a couple of his CD's, one of which I like a lot. Have NO IDEA what year it is. You know, I was always more interested in who the producer was, as opposed to the year of release. I discovered many an artist/band like that. There was a period of time that I just damn near bought anything T-Bone Burnett produced. He had a real knack of working with young talented bands. Produced the 1st BoDeans LP ("Love, and Hope, and Sex, and Dreams"), for just one example. HEY, when did THAT come out??? Did we all miss it?
11/8/2017 12:15 PM
listening to gear daddies...they are very good......
wilco is one of my favorite bands.
t - bone burnett did some good stuff with elvis costello.

T-Bone Burnett also put together one of the great soundtrack albums of all time, the Coen Brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou?

I just finished reading about the transgender Dem beating the bathroom bill Rep -- in Virginia!

Virginia’s most socially conservative state lawmaker was ousted from office Tuesday by Danica Roem, a Democrat who will be one of the nation’s first openly transgender elected officials and who embodies much of what Del. Robert G. Marshall fought against in Richmond.

The race focused on traffic and other local issues in suburban Prince William County but also exposed the nation’s fault lines over gender identity. It pitted a 33-year-old former journalist who began her physical gender transition four years ago against a 13-term incumbent who called himself Virginia’s “chief homophobe” and earlier this year introduced a “bathroom bill” that died in committee.

“Discrimination is a disqualifier,” a jubilant Roem said Tuesday night as her margin of victory became clear. “This is about the people of the 13th. District disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias... where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it.”

Marshall, 73, who refused to debate Roem and referred to her with male pronouns, declined an interview request but posted a concession message on Facebook.

Bad day in Trumplandia!

the homophobe getting beat by the transgender has got to become a movie.

Name that title? How about (in honor of MC Hammer) Don't touch this (or was it that?)

you're right, a very weak year, but here's a few I might have considered:
The Rhythm of the Saints - Paul Simon
Still Got the Blues - Gary Moore
Stolen Moments - John Hiatt
Blues Traveler - Blues Traveler
Hell to Pay - Jeff Healey Band
Jackopierce - Jackopierce

Back to music musing.......... T-Bone has done good stuff with about everybody!

So, I got lost somewheres during all your lists. Did you guys do mid 80's?? Like 1982 thru 4? Cause if so, we all (somehow) missed the great Canadian rock band Red Rider. They were great. Had a big hit sometime in there with "Lunatic Fringe", and another one or two if I remember right. Had to be about 1982 or 1983. Crazy ought to know this, eh?
