Of course, since the poverty line varies from place-to-place, the minimum wage should also vary accordingly.
(FWIW, I have suggest legalized marijuana to strikeout as tomorrow's topic. I'd love to hear some of the misguided reasons why people feel it would be OK to have more impaired people on our roads and workplaces, other than increase tax and regulation money.)
There's a whole lot of right in the first paragraph.
Nobody wants to see people live in poverty. I just don't believe the government should compel companies to pay a certain wage. Let the market decide what is fair. If you work a low-skill job, the market is not going to put a premium on it. If you are unhappy with your income, figure out how to improve your income. What trade can I learn? What credentials can I gain that will improve my income? Putting hamburger patties on a bun is not worth $40k per year. Learn a trade that does have value in the marketplace.
